Saleries in central Florida

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I am an English nurse wanting to move to sunny central Florida. Can any-one advise me how much I may be able to earn on medical/surgical wards, and is it enough to support my family over there? I have been told I can earn $50,000 per year, plus out of hours benifits, by the relocation agency I have signed up with. I am getting a bit worried reading some of your messages as this doesn't seem to be right.

Thanks

Centralflorida,

Your right, I'm planing to move back to houston,tx once i'm done with school. 19/hr for new grad is just sad. Waiters and waitresses working at a expensive resturants makes about the same amount of money. I just can't see my self working everyday making 19/hr. That's what lpn's are getting in LTC. So, when do you finish school? I start in august 20th. I'm doing the ADN program and will probably finish my BSN in Houston, or California

Hi, I was just curious as to which CC you are attending in the fall. I am also in Central Florida and will be attending SCC and UCF. It's good to see someone from my area about to go thru the same thing as me. Are you as nervous, excited, and anxious as I am :monkeydance:? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi

I work in a pediatric hosp in central FL and I average about 26.00$ and hour as a new grad. Of course after taxes, insurance for me and my son (a whopping 200$ per mos), and eating in the caf it averages out to about 21.00 bucks an hour, mind you I work nights and most weekends so im getting diffs. I do think the pay here is horrible, compared to the cost of living. A decent 2bdr apt that is not completely ghetto and unsafe for a single mom runs you upward of 900 a mos, then add on gas, food, clothing, and utilities. The pay here is horrible. And theres not much OT available on my floor. Both my friends both work second jobs in nursing homes just to subsidize their income because the work in the 2 major hospitals in the area.

J Bean, is the 26 an hour your base pay or with the weekend and shift differential? I know what you mean about struggling - I have two kids and make $17 an hour at my current job. I am lucky I have a low mortgage payment, but everything else just eats it up. For me, at least when I go into nursing, when I need extra money I can always find somewhere to work overtime - not an opportunity at my current job.

Laced, I am going to Polk Community College. I am not nervous and excited yet because I've done regular college before - but I will be once I start nursing school!

Hey guys,

I'm attending Saint Johns River Community College, it's locate in Saint Augustine, Fl. I start august and i'm a bit excited. I'm just happy overall. I'm going for my ADN and was planing to move to orlando or tampa when i'm done, I'm also in the military and if I stay in florida all of my tution will be paid for. :lol2: I am dissapointed in the pay, but I figure I might just get a roomate once i'm done with my ADN. Good luck everyone

I moved here from Louisiana after Katrina, and nurses there average about $60,000/year. Before the storm, you could buy a small but decent house in an OK neighborhood in New Orleans for under $100,000. The market has changed since, as most of those neighborhoods flooded, but I could still afford to buy there. Here in Tampa, nurses make about $10,000 less according to salary.com. Yet a small but decent house in an OK neighborhood is over $200,000. So not fair.

Thats the avg I make with my night diffs and the weekends I mostly work...like I said after taxes and insurance it drops down to 20$, but my base pay on paper is 20.22...ITS PATHETIC!! And the crazy part is everybody else thinks I make great money!!! UMMM NOT!!:angryfire

I guess relative to many other jobs it probably pays well...but it's still barely a living wage with expenses being what they are. Have you looked into anything like working through an agency or doing travel nursing but only taking jobs in the local area? Or even moving to somewhere with better pay? I'm certainly going to consider all of those things when I graduate.

Wow I know what you mean when you say people thinkg 20/hr is great pay. It's funny because there are people here making 10/hr and raising families on it. Seriously, wall mart workers makes like 13/hr stocking food. WTH is that.

P.S. What's some of the greates ICU's to work at in Northern Florida. I live in St. Augustine and I'm willing to relocate around florida.
