Question: You have a patient with a Salem Sump Nasogastric Tube. Your hospital doesn’t use antireflux valves. Your patient needs to go to the bathroom. How do you prevent the tube from leaking while they are in the bathroom?

I use a gauze wrapped around the sump lumen so that it can catch the gastric juices that come out if it but without impairing the flow of air through it.

Thanks, I do this too. There are some who believe you can connect the blue vent to the main tube and I was wondering if anyone had literature to support that.

As in bending the blue tail and stuffing it in the lumen of the main? Seen it done. Not recommended by the manufacturer and not a good idea.
Oh no! They use the 5-in-1 adapter. I’m finding more info as I go: see the pic! Someone recommended the fold over method I was shocked!!

That is how I have always done it. It's okay for the sump lumen to be capped if the NG is not to suction. Just clear it with some air prior to reconnecting.

There’s nothing the matter with that for the short period it will be off suction to go to the bathroom. The important thing to do is to be very sure that air is going down the blue air vent lumen when you get it hooked up again- listen or feel it with your fingertip. The tube may need repositioning after the walk if shooting a bit of air down the vent lumen doesn’t work. If it’s not letting air down the vent lumen when the main lumen is to suction, it’s not working properly and has to be fixed, or the suction is just putting hickeys in the gastric mucosa.
