Salary Negociations??

Hello all -

I've been working PT, less than 1 year experience as a LNA I am about ready to move FT to another facility. I have heard conflicting statements on whether to negociate salary wondering what your thoughts are on this? How do you approach this with HR?

You should start by deciding how badly you want the job, what is the minimum you'll accept, and what would be exceeding your expectations.

An attempt to negotiate salary may result in the job offer being retracted. (It's happened to me.) Therefore, if you really want the job and the offer exceeds your minimum, I'd be careful about pushing for more.

On the other hand, it usually doesn't hurt to ask but you do need to be prepared to say "no" and walk away from the position in the hopes that they'll give in and give you what you want.

You also should do your homework and try to figure out what CNAs are paid for comparable work in similar facilities. Don't expect them to pay you more than they would pay someone else for that job.

Be polite, be respectful. Ask them if there's any latitude to discuss the pay based on your experience.

The facilities around here typically offer one uniform starting pay rate for all aides being hired, regardless of the years of experience under your belt. Pay rates for aides tend to be non-negotiable in my area.

Thanks for both your responses. To give you an update:

I did get an offer. I wanted the job BAD, so it didnt matter if they offered me a dollar. I delicately felt out if room for negociations, nadda. So I accepted it anyway. I am sooooooooo happy! Finally another step to become a nurse. :)

Are you going to be working in a hospital or nursing home?

Thank you! - When I got my LNA license I went straight into LTC - I appreciate all the workers in the facilty but clearly it just is not for me. I feel more confident the hospital setting will suit me nicely.

I applied at the local hospital and it was a sure fit! I am so excited to start I feel like a 6 year old going to school for the first time. :)
