It really depends on where you are living. 27/hr is a pretty good rate in my area. Are all of your patients in facilities? If so, how many facilities and how far do you have to drive? If you have several patients in one facility, it can make your job easier, but if you have one here and there it can be more difficult. Having 15 patients is a full time job. Do they expect you to drum up business when you are carrying a full patient load - or when you're slow? You will probably be able to do this easily in the facilities that you serve just because you'll be there making relationships with the staff. My patients are usually within a few mile of eachother - on occasion I have to drive 30 miles out

$27/hr is the prn salary where I live. .44/mile is also roughly the reimbursement we receive. I just accepted a full-time admissions position with the hospice company I was working prn for - and I took a pay cut, not huge - but less than $27/hr.

Depending on where you live, it sounds like a good deal - and you'll love working with hospice. Congratulations on your new job!

The pay is really decent for where I live. I am a fairly new single parent and I will be supporting myself and my two children soley on what I make. :mad: Right now I am driving "Percy", our old honda civic that has 178,000+ (not a typo) miles on him and I need to get a newer car. Also I am hoping to buy a house within a year...nothing fancy, just someplace safe and sound. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't very nervous and even a bit panicky inside. This job offer seemed almost too good to be true and I freaked out a little. I was concerned that since I am so ignorant, I was agreeing to something I would really regreat agreeing to.

This offer is just like having a lottery ticket float down from the sky and land in my lap...and it couldn't have come at a better time. I was just worried that wanting something so badly was making me blind to reality...and that reality was far less rosy.

I spoke with another nurse today who worked home health for ten years and has worked hospice for another ten. She has worked at three different hospice jobs and currently works for the company that has hired me. Although we did not talk exact dollar amounts, she was very positive about this particular company and how it treats its employees. *pinch me*:wink2:

I have so many things going on; and I just put in my two weeks notice today...it is the first time I have ever quit a job because I got a better offer :rolleyes: . I am a new nurse but I have been working for over twenty years and could never say up to now that "i got a better offer". I feel so grown up! (ha ha ha) On top of this...my STBX quit his job three weeks ago and has decided he "wants to work for himself" :uhoh21: with no real business plan and no back-up plan in place. So now there is no insurance or child support as we had discussed. :mad: But I always knew in my heart that I would end up being soley financially responsible for the kids as soon as I got my first nursing job. I actually feel deeply blessed and grateful that he was able to stay employed long enough for me to finish school. I was just hoping for a little bit of time with two incomes in order to save up a bit more money. Oh well...we will be okay.

Hello all
I am new to hospice nursing and have had a job offer that I would really appreciate your input on:
-27.00 dolloars/hr with 40 hr work week= my salary.
-44 cents per mile
-no call unless the call nurse can't make it
-a fairly spread-out territory (how far is too far???)
-up to 15 patients :uhoh21:
-open access care
-nsg home and assisted living patients
-i am relocating to do the job without relocation assistance (its my dream job)
-i will also be "drumming up business" by going visiting to diff hospitals etc. to introduce myself and what our services are (looking forward to this part too).
-benefits that sound pretty good.
When and how do I negotiate for more/less etc. ?? I could really use some mentoring on this guys because the area where I am currently living is sadly short on positive nurse-to-nurse vibes.

That's a pretty fair offer for Georgia. I don't know where you are, so I can't comment really. We only get 40 cents a mile. We have an after hours nurse so our call isn't that bad. Just think, you are starting pretty good and the only way to go is UP!
