So, I have been looking on craigslist for apts to rent when I get to Seattle but what is the best way to go about sealing a deal with a person thousand of miles away (signing contracts, paying rent/deposits and obtaining keys? One person I don' t think is even in Seattle either right now. I don't want to end up being scammed or without housing once I arrive.

I would suggest going through a company if you are worried.

I've used Craigslist a lot, and before I travel. But I've never paid money sight unseen. That is a little crazy. Stay in a motel for a few nights and have a few likely prospects lined up to see on a couple days before you start. Or take a week. A lot of times you get some great deals from staff.
