Safe Dose

Cefaclor 1.5 tsp (250mg/5ml) PO every 12 hours is prescribed a respiratory infection. Using the label, how many mls will the nurse give in a single dose? Recommended safe dose for Cefaclor for this patient is 250-500 mag orally every 8 hours. Is the dose safe to give?

The label states 375mg/5ml

Your order is confusing. I have never seen an order like that. It telling you a dosage based on a different concentration than the label. That would lead to a potential overdose. It should be XXX mg Cefaclor every 12 hours without the "1.5 tsp".

Your order (250mg/5 mL) is different than the label (375 mg/5 mL.). Is that correct or a mistake?

Terrible question.

Here's what the question is trying to say:

1) The order was made based on a Cefaclor suspension of 250mg/5ml, and will require 1.5 tsp @ that concentration. So, how many mg is that? Do that calculation: _______.

2) But the nurse doesn't have that concentration available and instead has on hand Cefaclor with a concentration of 375mg/5 ml.

3) So...how many tsp will the nurse administer q 12?

4) Is that a safe dose?
