I'm graduating with my ASN in a year and really reaaaaaally tired of New Orleans. Sure, I'd love to play tourist here but after growing up here, I'm done with being a resident.
I absolutely love northern Cal, Sac-Tahoe area and I'm setting my sites on moving there.
DH is in law enforcement and there are more opportunities for him there as well. He is finishing up a bachelors degree and wanting to possibly purse an MBA or law school. I'm debating going back to finish my biology degree. I like that Sac area has colleges and universities with broad opportunities.
I looked into hiring sections of hospitals and seems to be new grad friendly but I'm not familiar with the pros and cons of various hospitals.
Anyone from that area willing to take me under their wing and educate me on the area more than what I saw as a tourist?
Nursing opportunities, areas to live/avoid, hiring practices, universities for advanced studies... just anything. I'll take any information you can give!
We're planning a trip in December and I could really use some advice on where we can spend time looking at residential areas, etc.
And anyone interested in New Orleans, I got you covered for info!
This may sound odd to you Justkeepsmiling but.. I used to live in Sacramento as a youngster/adolescent and currently live in Louisiana. I've been in Louisiana close to 18 years and my family would like me to move back to Sac of course because they miss me terribly and planned on going out there for some time and consider moving back to Lou and keep my license current. I on the other hand can't deal with California. I am far too at home and comfortable here in Lou and would very much like to work in Nola but having not much luck finding many LPN positions. Any suggestions on what or where I would search to find positions in New Orleans?
I would suggest finding a job in the type of nursing that you would like to pursue ANYWHERE you can. Work at it, learn from it for AT LEAST 2 years! If you want to work in California, more power to you, but come with at LEAST a BRN degree, if not a Masters; heck, come with a BRN AND an advanced degree in Healthcare Administration.
In Northern California, there are NO new grad jobs, NO returning RN jobs, ONLY (very) experienced RN jobs. Sure, there are exceptions, but VERY few and you must be networked/connected. Believe me, it is HARD to find a job in California (at least Northern California) if you do not have CURRENT and extensive esperience in the EXACT field of nuring you're applying to. It is the ultimate employers' market! You have 2 years med/surg experience? Think of applying for ICU job? Think of applying for ER job? Think of applying for ANY job other than med/surg? It is NOT going to happen.
Truth be told, EVERYONE who has a RN behind their name (seemingly) wants to work in California since the Nurse/Patient ratio law came into effect. High(er) pay (higher living expense, though), (usually) reasonable client load. People are STREAMING here from all over the world, let alone the United States to work as an RN. Hospital Administration LOVES it!

Sutter Roseville also. Hey, parts of north Sacramento aren't ghetto. Rio Linda/Elverta is country. I would stay away from Rancho Cordova and South Sac. (apologies to anyone on here). If I was buying another house, it would be in Orangevale, Folsom, Roseville or Rocklin.
