I'm waiting to hear back from SAC too - I hope I get in for this fall. My friend just heard back via email, they didn't get in and they had a 3.6 GPA and had all but 2 of their classes done! I don't understand why they wouldn't have been accepted - it makes me quite nervous. I hope we all get in, my fingers are crossed!

Because SAC uses a point system for acceptance. Your friend didn't have the increased number of points from having those classes completed before applying, and it is competitive ( http://www.alamo.edu/sac/nursing/dnepol/admissn.html see step 4 of 5). Your friend should reapply after the prereqs are completed and should have a much better chance of getting in.

hi solairesolstice,

did you attend sac nursing school? thanks for the information. helpful and good to know. have a good day.

Yes I did, and although my overall GPA was not competitive, (3.2ish?), my completed pre-reqs and GPA for those courses alone (3.7) for the program got me acccepted the first time I applied. I graduated May 2010.

wow! congratulations!! thats awesome. well thats still a very good gpa. i think anything above 3.0 is good enough. how was the program? was it difficult? any advice on what to expect, especially the first semester? thanks so much for your input.

hi noelle,

i don't know how you do it, taking more classes and having three kids. i think three kids alone is hard enough. i have a 8yr old in school, a 5 yr old and a 1yr old. yes, its been torture!! i check the mail everyday, sometimes twice a day. lol..i just want to know yes or no and move on. i also hope we can all be classmates..best of luck to all of us..:)

Um, how much time do you have?

Be flexible. Don't miss class for any reason, no matter what, even if. No I didn't find it difficult unless I just wasn't interested in it, like OB or Pediatrics. Again, be flexible. Those class schedules? Think of them as "suggestions", not rules. You may find your actual clinical times varies greatly from what was on the schedule. Even by DAYS. Don't expect alot of sympathy from the administration on that front. This is very competative and there were 10 other hopefuls who were turned down so you could get in. Just be where you are supposed to, listen carefully, do your work, and you will do fine.

Thanks, SolaireSolstice for all the helpful info...I think hearing anything right now is enough to calm my nerves!! And Carmen, I take my hat off to you and all the other women out there juggling school, work, and most importantly, children!!! I know it isn't easy, yet you do what you have to do! :yeah:

Well, as Ms Sweet will tell you (during your orientation, fingers crossed), take this time to get your life in order, because your next 2 years will be absorbed by school. Read books that have NOTHING to do with nursing, see some movies, go on vacation. Get off this site.

Or, get a job as a CNA or unit clerk, because it will give you some insight into how to read charts, orders, how the hospital functions. I worked as a unit clerk for 7 years before I started school, and simply being able to know where to find things in the chart and how to interpret those things was extremely helpful during clinicals. It will also give you some idea of how a hospital functions.

I always said during school that they were teaching us the ideal patient. This is how that patient will react to this drug or that disease. Well, in reality, life is unpredictable and humans even more so. And never mind the diseases. They have no brain.

Once you get out of Fundamentals (feeding patients and showers 101) and into the hospital, pick the hardest patients. You will learn more, and you will have help. I used to tell the patient I cared for "You have me AND your nurse today, and although I can't do everything that nurse can yet, you will have me all to yourself while I am here." I tell you the care you will give to that patient during the short time you have them will be rewarding. Pick the immobile 250+ lb incontinent guy with a wound that needs a dressing change. LEARN HOW TO DO A BED BATH. I drag every student that I get assigned with me to do a bed bath and I am absolutely shocked at how many think they would never have to do that as an RN. If I don't do it, who will? And this patient needs one. Learn how to do safe transfer from bed to bed side commode.

Thanks SolaireSolstice,

Wow, now I am more nervous. I do hope we all get accepted. I appreciate your advice. Alot of helpful information. Thanks a bunch!! Was it difficult to find a job after graduation? Have a good day. Thanks!!
