Rush vs Vanderbilt

Published

If you were hiring a PNP, which program would you find most impressive, Rush or Vandy? Assume that everything else is equal--nursing experience, references, GPA, etc. I think I have narrowed down my search for the right grad program to these two, but I need some input as to reputation of the school and program. I believe they are both good, but which will give me the most bang for the buck??

HELP?

Syd, What/where are you ultimately wanting to do? I think this information needs to be known here as well.

Both of these schools are well regarded in academic circles, but beyond that, who cares? Someone already mentioned, you take the same exam, the costs are about the same. Both Rush and Vanderbilt shared a Dean for decade, so think common pedigree here (diverse, new-edge specialties).

As far as PNP, Rush is #7 on the USNWR rankings, and that is impressive in my book. Vandy didn't make a showing, but that was 2007 and they only show the top 10, they could be 11 or 19, who knows?

Also, it depends upon what/where you're going to land. Unless you plan upon a doctorate at another North/South/West Ivy League and/or wish to teach graduate school, administer a medical center, or conduct research/publish, I think your splitting hairs between these two great institutions.

Hmmm...I suggest going to both!

I would ultimately like to get my DNP (someday down the road...maybe after working as an NP for 5-6 years), and maybe do some teaching at the college level. As a NP I'd like to focus on endocrinology or cardiology, and I am not sure whether I want to do PNP or FNP ( I keep hearing that it is smart to keep your scope of practice as broad as possible).

I am glad to hear that both of these schools are considered good and that a degree from either one would be somewhat impressive. If there isn't really much difference between the two, I'll have to come up with some other way of deciding between the two--maybe it will come down to being accepted at one and not the other, who knows! :)

Thanks again for the feedback!

Apply to both, take a walking tour. Compare finances, scholarships, cost of attendance (food, apartment, gas, COL, airline tickets, etc) and talk to current and past students. Nashville vs Chicago...hmmmm.

I think one black & gold institution will come out a shining star above the rest. I'm trying to be as impartial as possible here...Go 'Dores!!!

Please don't feel pressure to be impartial! If you love your school and are happy with the education you've gotten there, I want to hear it! That is the kind of thing that helps me to decide. :)

PS: The big "V" at the bottom of your post was very subtle. Well done! :)

another q- are you in the South, I am and am excited to be attending another SEC school {Bama to Vandy!} -Rush is not as recognizable here as Vanderbilt but it is a great school!

I am in Wisconsin, so Rush is closer. However, when I ask people (instructors, my primary care doc, etc.) what they think of both schools most people recognize the Vanderbilt name more than Rush for some reason. Sports maybe? The only people who have heard of Rush here seem to be physicians, which isn't necessarily a bad thing given that these are probably the same people one would WANT to recognize the name of a school.

The Vanderbilt name carries more in the Northeast/east coast as well. Remember your history, although, to me, this has absolutely nothing to do with the academics, nor institutional reputation, but just like sports, "I've heard...etc."

So, just like Kennedy, Rockefeller, Duke, Hughes...you get the idea. I still don't think you'll do wrong by attending either program. An analogy is trying to decide between Duke, Wake Forrest and UNC, all superb schools within 100 miles of each other. Try to flip that coin!

having attended rush i can tell you they are great. excellent faculty, very supportive. they do not have a sports team, the focus is on healthcare education. vandy has a great reputation. my vote would be rush, but i am biased.

can you tell me which specialty you did? good to hear that you really enjoyed your experience at rush!

yeah, i am not planning on trying out for football any time soon, and i am loyal to my precious badgers, so the sports team thing isn't an issue for me. it would be nice if it were all the simple, right? :)

Hey! You had pm me, but i can't respond back! I think u will do fine..my stats were very close to yours! I applied late...the end of march and was accepted! I did go through ultrasound school and it was heavily focused on OBGYN--A&P and patho, so that might of helped, but who knows!! Best of luck and try not to worry, life is better that way :)
