Hi all
Just have a few questions about rural nursing...I am interested in rural nursing either in victoria or nsw..I have about a year and a half experience in ED. .Can anyone recommend any good rural hospitals in either of those states that are not too small...And could you also tell me whats good about those hospitals? Im looking for as much experience as possible. Also any hospitals i should avoid??
Also can anyone recommend any good and reliable agencies i could go with as there seem to be hundreds of them popping up everywhere. Any info would be appreciated.

anne, the manager, is really nice to talk to, she is a wee scottish lady but has a nice burr (i could understand her cos my parents are scottish!) she also told me all rural jobs come with accommodation and flights all or partly paid (or the hospital pays for it in some cases). here's the net address: http://www.yourworldmedical.com.au/

I was recently *this close* in going to Alice Springs Hospital ICU for a secondment (couldn't go in the end as my hospital refused to allow any leave without pay, even though our unit is about 3FTE over). I think for a first time rural placement, it might be a great place to consider. Alice Springs is an established rural town, but with plenty of infrastructure in place. From there you could easily transfer out to rural and remote nursing, once you get a feel for the place.

I spent 3 months working in a rural hospital that had 10 aged care beds that had full time residents, 5 sub acute beds and an emergency dept in NSW. I worked as the sole RN on shift with an EN. I had GP cover 3-4 days a week and they would attend the hospital for any pts that presented to ED. On the other days I would have to ring the base hospital over 2 hours away for advice on how to treat the pt and if they required transfer or admission to my hospital.
If I had gone any further into the countryside to a hospital I would have been using RFDS for advice and transport. It was boring at times for days with just the aged care pts but I had a full on cardiac arrest, peads burns and labouring woman come in (on different days!)
Let me know if you want more info.
