runners in nursing school?

Published

is anyone else a runner and in nursing school? How do you balance it? I've been a teacher for the last 7 years - now I am a full time student! My running routine hasn't really adjusted as well as I had hoped - any suggestions for getting in time to run while in school? It helps me stay sane :)

I envy you guys. I'm not a runner but I'd like to start. It always makes my back hurt though.

It's probably best to avoid running then if you have some type of joint/nerve issue. However, your posture, running shoes, and running surface could play apart in it.

I don't think it's a joint or nerve situation. I just got fat. At my peak I was 220 lbs. (I'm 6'0"). I'm down to 202 now. I would like to get down to about 180 lbs. I've heard that abdominal fat increases the risk of heart attack, so, I'm trying to get rid of the ole beer gut.

I always loved running as a kid. In High School I was on the track team and I played soccer. That was eons ago.

I think it's just the fatness that makes my back hurt. I think I'll bring this up to my Doctor.

I used to be girl who HATED running and I was terrible at it. I've lost about 50 lbs since so I get where you are coming from. Try intervals - google "running intervals" and start there. My favorite (the one I started with until I could actually DO IT) is this:

run 30 seconds/walk 30, run 45 s/walk45, run 60/walk 60, run 90/walk 90 - then work your way back down from 90, 60, 45, 30

Took me a while to get it, where I could run each interval - but from there I started trying different intervals & eventually graduated to running one mile, 3 miles...now I run half marathons. Trust me - it's totally do-able, just one step at a time (literally, ha!) Also visit a running store near you (not academy and such) and ask to be fitted for shoes. It's free, they'll watch your stride and fit you for shoes that are right for your body to eliminate joint/back pain.

Running keeps me sane and has made a HUGE life-changing impact for me - don't give up, it took me years of trying and failing until I felt like I was a runner.....

Great suggestions Swoody, thank you very much. :)
