Rules for staying at the hospital you were hired as a traveler for.

Specialties Travel

Can any experienced travelers tell me what is the rule for becoming a permanent employee at the hospital you most recently traveled at. Except not staying on the unit you were there for. For instance wanting to staying to work a specialty area that isn't always available to gain experience to potentially travel again in the specialized area. Appreciate the input. Thanks.

There are no rules. However your agency's contract with the hospital may stipulate a fee if the hospital hires you inside of a certain period after your last day as a traveler there. The period is usually 6 or 12 months. The stated fee is usually equivalent to three months compensation but is often negotiated down.

A change of specialty is irrelevant to these clauses

HR will tell you if this presents any obstacle to them hiring you. Do not discuss it with your agency unless the hospital tells you that they cannot hire you because of this fee.

Your own contract with the agency may state you may not work at that hospital for that blackout period. Even if the hospital is willing to hire you (perhaps because that clause is not in their contract with the agency) you may still be liable or at least threatened if the agency finds out.

Which is is a good reason not to discuss this with you agency unless it is the last resort to get your dream job and either you are the hospital are unwilling to wait out the expiration of this clause. Of course, the hospital may well be willing to pay the fee but it might impact your relocation stipend or sign on bonus.

Yep. Just depends on what your travel contract says. I did a travel assignment and hired on FT. No fee paid. No stipulations in my travel contract.
