RPN / RN, Degree / Diploma HELP!

Im moving over to Canada soon, i am currently a newly registered nurse here in the UK having completed my 3 year diploma.

I was hoping that the process of finding a nursing job in Canada would be a simple one, however as i am moving to Ontario, it seems not!

I am a little worried by the number of people commenting that CNO do not accept a diploma, looking at the requirements on their website my diploma has covered all of them.

What is the process? Apply to the CNO and then they give a  or  then the CRNE exam?

Would i then be a RN or RPN.

Sorry if this seems a little flustered!

The province of Ontario is the only province to use the term "RPN" for a LPN (or what used to be known in the UK as a SEN).

In Western Canada "RPN" is the designation for a Reg. Psychiatric Nurse.

CNO reviews each application individually (and all nursing Colleges across the country) are backlogged with overseas applications. Also the Ontario posters are reporting difficulties in finding full time work (our economy is/has suffered but not as badly as the US)

hi so1982

i think since you completed a diploma nursing program, this means you did not complete a baccalaureate degree for registered nurses and you did not complete a diploma for registered practical nurses. i believe in this case, you request your school of nursing to send a course description directly to cno. they will review the course description and inform you about the next steps.

Great information!

Hi there

I have a diploma in nursing from UK project 2000 course 1998 , I dont have a degree which you need to have in order to practice as an RN in ontario. I am now certify as a RPN and have to sit exam in May.I applied in early July but they did not start processing application until they had received all transcripts and employer details until 20th Aug and I received the answer in mid November after the 12 weeks were up. So be prepare to wait .

I am Looking for information on the eight hour test and what it consists of from a uk perspective. If anyone could help please thank you .

CPNRE is two booklets. One in the morning, one in the afternoon. It's written the same day across the country. Basically it covers everything the course content of a Canadian educated practical nurse from drugs, to IV fluids, to interpersonal communication.

Now if you are writing the Reg. Psych Nurse exam that's another kettle of fish...

In truth I would consider upgrading your qualifications to a degree (can be done part-time in the UK.) By the time you've finished, the economy in Canada will most likely have picked up again & then you will be in a prime position to apply because you'll have a degree & experience.

With the UK thinking of becoming all degree the result should be courses becoming easy to find in the near future.

Information on the Canadian practical nurses registration exam is available on the assessment strategies inc website http://www.asitest.ca/PN/where_to_learn_more.htm

You can purchase a study guide for the exam through http://esubmitit.sjpg.com/asi/home.cfm

That being said, I do not think 2010 is the time for a nurse to make the move to Ontario, there are qualified nurses who have been struggling to find work since 2009 and you will likely face similar difficulties if you move here.
