RNFA program with no experience

Hello everyone, I like to learn as much as I can when it comes to health care. I was curious if it's possible to enroll into RNFA programs without prior experience. I wanted to learn the suturing techniques that one is taught there. Thank you!

Are you interested in becoming an RNFA or only interested in learning how to suture? If the first, no experience is going to depend on the program, but I highly doubt there will be many of good repute that will accept nurses who don't have any scrub experience whatsoever. If it's the second, some suture companies will have suturing seminars where they will teach suturing techniques. My facility recently hosted one provided by Ethicon, the company that makes the majority of the sutures we use. Why not look into that instead of attending a lengthy and costly program just to learn how to suture?

Thank you very much Rose_Queen! Yes I will look into that instead of paying so much for a program. I honestly just want to learn suturing techniques for now, however I would have been great if it was in my scope of practice, but oh well...

I also don't mind mind having more certs under my belt, just don't want to have so many years of scrub experience under my belt... I'm an ICU kind of guy. Lol

Hello ChronicSG, BSN

To be eligible to enroll into a RNFA course you will need to obtain at least 2 years and 2400 hours of operating room experience as a RN which will also grant you CNOR eligibility (Certified Nurse Operating Room). However, you may attend NIFA's SutureStar hands-on skills training workshop without 2 years and 2400 hours of operating room experience. These great SutureStar workshops offer up to 30 times more suture and tying training than any program on the market today! By attending the elective 3 or 6-day SutureStar class you will receive the hands-on experience needed to assume the position of the first assistant, and prepare you with the essential skills necessary to function in this expanded role.
