RN to wellness coach at businesses/companie

Published

Okay so I have been working on a med/surg floor and I completely hate floor nursing. Pain med after antibiotic after pain med. Bleh. My passion is fitness and wellness and I really want to incorporate fitness programs and motivate people in companies or businesses. Does anyone know how to go about this? Do you need a certification in nutrition or exercise science?

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I do some of this, though it's very per diem. We do health screenings and educate people on what they need to work on. There are various agencies, and you can do a Google search for your area to find out. My company has worked with county offices (we just finished up a big contract working with county workers), big box stores, finance companies, etc. It's not enough for steady work, frankly, but it's a fun and low key side job.

I have no idea how to incorporate fitness as a nurse (though it would interest me, too!), except to maybe work in rehab or with a sports med office. Otherwise you could do your NASM or ACSM certification to be a personal trainer, which could be good.

Friendly tip- you may want to change your screen name to something more anonymous. This is a very public site, and it's important to protect yourself. :)

I am interested in this as well. I have been searching and often the title is "health coach". Please share any information you find regarding wellness/health nursing (except primary care-not interested).

Where I work this is a collateral duty, meaning that no one is hired specifically for this but it can be something you "also" do along with your regular job. On some occasions, in some facilities, it can be a posted position specifically AS a health/wellness coach, with the caveat that this is usually a temporary assignment, or unguaranteed as to duration. No contract.

While my company does provide the requisite training and certification to qualified applicants, as I said it isn't something you JUST do, it's something you do along with whatever else you do. I provide diet and fitness counseling, exercise counseling, tobacco cessation, etc but it's because it tags into my job as an RN already.

Sounds like an awesome position. I am guessing your position requires an RN license. Many if the health coach positions I have seen only a require a BS in a health related discipline not necessarily in Nursing.

It is :) And yes, RN required; whatever I do that isn't covered by that education IS covered by the Wellness Coach training/certification offered specifically through my employer. Rare bird that does this exclusively AS a job, but it's a nice tag-on.

Good luck to you.
