Hi all,

Just want to know when an RN would draw blood instead of a Phlebotomist when Phlebotomist is available?

Specializes in Neuro ICU and Med Surg.

I have to draw labs no matter what access the pt has. I work in the ICU but even the floor nurses and techs draw blood.

Specializes in Gyn Onc, OB, L&D, HH/Hospice/Palliative.

If the PCA is unavailable, if the pt has no assigned PCA, We used to do all our own Blood cultures(,there is a PCA on call if Cx's are ordered ) ,but if she's tied up, we still do them ourselves

Specializes in Emergency Room, Cardiology, Medicine.

On my floor, phlebotomists come between 6-9 am. So, any morning labs and labs ordered at that time, they would draw. Everything else is up to the good ol' RN, unless the patient is covered by the intern staff. Then they do the blood cultures and so on,.
