I'm not sure if it would be available to you in your particular area, but the American Red Cross has volunteer positions for nurses. I spoke with some of the nurses last time I donated blood and they were telling me about it. Volunteer nurses can perform donor screenings and blood collection, and probably a lot of other tasks, too!

Sorry I caught this later on...but I have a fun one for you actually! Now I use to work for Northwest Rock Medicine, a volunteer non-profit organzation that does medical for outdoor events and concerts. They mainly work in the Portland Metro area, but other areas have similar volunteer organizations as well...such as White Dove in Eugene! If you are at a local event...see if there is a med booth, and ask!

These are not only absolutey fun as heck, give you more experience in 5 mins (depending on type of event) then most jobs, but also introduces you to other areas of medicine like working with paramedics, naturalpathic MD's, NP's, RT's, MD's..you name it! I loved working for this organization (I don't have time now..but I haven't given it up yet!). Especially if you like field type medical (working with what you have, and using creative nursing skills!), and want to experience what is really out there in our communities (especially with youth!).

I went from a scared nursing student...to confident emergency go getter because I gained skills for emergencies and field type nursing that made my confidence go up up up, and had quite the autonomy! Oh yeah, and volunteer hours!!!!! Looks great on a resume too!!!!!!

I dealt with everything from dehydration of a 3 month old, to diabetic crisises, to a 14 year old girl with a serious spinal cord injury being life flighted. But if you are more inclined to do more mellow stuff (unlike me who was in the middle of mosh pits at some events caring for crowd surfers falling), you can do assessments and help with IV's and what not dependant on what that organization does! (when I wanted to chill, I worked in the booth and did assessments, paperwork, helped with IV's, held children for parent patients, handed out suntan lotion and water...and it was all fun!!!!

do they hire volunteers that are not yet licensed as RN's?

I think they want you to have your license, but, it never hurts to ask.
