RN student = CNA?

Published

Hi All,

I am a first year nursing student working for my two year RN degree. One of my instructors informed the class that after our first semester we will be able to work as UAP's and will have equal status as a CNA. I was wondering if anyone knows if after the first semester we are eligible to take our CNA certification test?? This is in Georgia.

I'm currently a CNA in georgia and I believe that your allowed to challenge the exam after your first semester of nursing school. The only thing is I don't know if your nursing school will show you the exact steps of the skills that you will be assessed on the actual state exam. But the pamphlet of the steps are online however through the GA nurse aide registry. I'm sure if you just go over it over and over again and watch some videos on Youtube, you'll be fine.

Okay!! Thanks so much! I just figured that it would be a better step to have my CNA rather than to work as a UAP.

Couldn't anyone, hypothetically, go to work in the capacity of an unlicensed assistive person(nel)?

I just got picked up at local hospital as a UAP. Because of nursing school, I was hired as a Nursing Assistant and didn't need to take the CNA exam. Though I do the exact same things as the CNA's I work beside, I guess the biggest difference is that I can't easily transfer to another hospital or work out of the state in the same capacity. I'm okay with this as I only have 9 months till I graduate for my RN. (fingers crossed)

But me thinks the OP wants to be "licensed".

Will certified work? ;)

In the context of healthcare, UAP often means CNA. CNA's are "certified", but don't have a nursing license. In some cases, there are other UAP's besides CNA's but even then they have generally taken some sort of class to get a different certification...
