I am a foreign nurse who recently passed my NCLEX exam, but now faces a difficult situation due to recent IRS law changes. The RN Board tells me that the only remaining information I need to provide is a SSN or ITIN (Indiv. Tax ID) in order to receive my RN license. However, IRS will no longer issue ITINs without me filing taxes. But how can I work and file taxes without a RN license? Similarly, I cannot get a SSN unless I have sponsorship from a hospital, but how can I interview for jobs without a license?
I have contacted the BRN about this conflict, but they don't yet know what to do...
Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there hospitals willing to interview me given my situation? I can provide the letter from BRN showing that I have passed my exam and met other requirements for a RN license.
I have 2+ years of ICU experience, but am willing to work in other fields as a staff RN as well.
Thank you!!!

Recently I applied to Sharp, their immigration lawyer call me up in case I needed help!!! very nice of them I thought. Perhaps they would help sponsor you or something. My husband is American and a lawyer so I'm fortunate that he sorted all that stuff out for me. I have not sat the NCLEX yet, congratulations on passing well done!!! What is your staus here in the USA are you here legally if so why can't you get a SSN? I have interviewed without a license, I have my interim permit, I have found generally that hospitals are quite helpful especially Sharp. Contact some hospital HR departments some of them do sponsor people some hospitals do not. You have passed your NCLEX so thats a huge bonus, it would be in the hospitals best interest to help sponsor you .
Best of luck,
Sinead

Hi,
I´m also a foreign nurse, but I havn´t passed the NCLEX yet. But I have a Greencard and that´s makes a lot easier to me ( only the formal Stuff) In reality its very difficult to get get an Interview from Germany. My Goal to sit for NCLEX in July 2004. I think that the evaluation from the CGFNS is good enough for the CA.State Board of Nursing so that I will hold the interim permit in March or so. We will see. Go to http://www.openheart.com this is a Company that will help foreign Nurse to get a job and maybe a valid visa.
Where you come from and could you share some thoughts how do plan your Nursing and living in California ?
See you later Carsten

ustraveller, i will be done with my BSN soon, well i actually have a year and a few months to go, i go to a school with a trisemestral curriculum. i lived in southern california for almost 3 years, i had a working permit before but got laid off, so my permit was sort of exchanged to a tourist visa.
a friend of mine told me that even if i don't take the board here in my country (the local board i suppose)i can challenge the board there (the local board is more on theories, she said, with the hospital duty load and my study habits...it will not be as difficult)i just need to get a higher grade than the passing score...is it possible that someone/hospital/company will sponsor me?please enlighten me with regards to this matter:confused::)

The California board of registered nursing will give you an interim permit without a SSN. Then when you get your SSN, they will issue your permanent lisence. You can work as a nurse with your interim permit in any hospital in the state.

My friend's sister was able to get a 1 year extension from California board of nursing. (she filed for an immigrant visa back in 2006 and due to retrogression, her papers are still on hold)
My concern is that i do not have a valid reason to ask for an extension since i have not yet filed for anything. Do all requests for extension get approved?

Moved to the International forum
this is a very old thread however I do feel you have nothing to loose but ask for an extension, doesn't mean you have an application with immigration. You may also want to consider applying to another state and making safe your NCLEX results. Suggest as good read in this forum a much has been written about CA etc

hospitals here in the us have questionnaires that asks whether you can work legally here. i tried that both online and in person at the HR office.
