RN physical demands

Published

Hello,

I'm currently a LPN working on my BSN. I was in a MVA and sustained chronic neck and back pain. It's been a year since but I still have symptoms. I was wondering whether the physical demands on RN the same as LPN? Considering there are way more options for RNs (in terms of work sites/roles) than LPN, given my situation should I still pursue RN? thanks in advance :)

You will definitely be in better position with the BSN. However, limited experience may be a major obstacle for you. Those desk jobs don't come easy for experienced nurses due to the fact that those holding those jobs are not readily vacating them. Most places want you to have paid RN experience, at least one year, before being considered. Also, one of the main questions on every application that I've seen is regarding pre-existing conditions that would prevent you from performing the duties of the position for which you are applying. This may prevent you from getting the job, not necessarily because of physical limitations, but also due to a possible perception of the facility having to shell out $$$$$$ in medical costs should you be selected.

All that aside, just today, I saw a posting with the VA that indicated a level for a nurse holding a BSN with no experience. Notice I said 'today'....might not be the case when you've completed your studies. Also, job openings for BSNs with no experience are also being sought by BSNs with experience, even if it's only a few months. Take me, for example. I'm looking for a non-acute care job myself. I have 4 years as an RN, just completed the BSN on 08/17/2014, was an LPN for 24 years prior to the RN, and have been in acute care for a solid 12 years. It is very possible that you (once graduated and licensed) and I are looking for the same job. Add to that, someone with experience in the actual area and you and I both are left out in the cold.

Good luck and I hope your back gets better.

hello BSNbeDONE, thank you for your response. I thought of the things you've mentioned, it's a very competitive market. I live in Alberta and RN positions here are not as difficult to come by than other Canadian Provinces (BC perhaps). I understand many would prefer RN experience as supposed to LPN, but im hoping the fact that i'm currently working for the health authority I stand a chance landing a desk job. It's good to hear from someone that it will still be worth it for me to finish BSN. I really thought I will have to give up my nursing career completely. I can probably get a desk job as a LPN but the pay scale isn't promising (if u know what I mean), i'd probably be better off working at a call center in that case. I'm hoping by the time I finish my studies my back somewhat recovered or at least heading that way. Thank you very much for your insights :) Cheers!

Oops! I didn't realize you were from other parts. I know nothing about the job prospects in other territories. At least, now, you have some idea of the challenges here (if you didn't already) should you decide to come south of the border.;)
