RN to Paramedic questions

Published

Anyone know if Michigan has any programs for Nurses to become a Paramedic? I love the ER but would also like to work on an ambulance. I read that there are PHRN programs but I don't know if Michigan has any or if it is worth it. Any thoughts on the best route to take? Thanks!

Look into baker. You may even only have to take a couple classes since you are already an RN

Specializes in Emergency Department.

Since it appears that Michigan does not appear to allow RN's to challenge the Paramedic exam, you will have to take a bridge course to do so. Check with colleges, universities, and tech schools in your area to see if they offer such a program. Your other option may be to challenge the Paramedic in another state that utilizes the NREMT as their certifying exam. Pass that and you may be able to get Michigan to then license you as a Paramedic.

I got this from the MDCH website:

There are three ways to become licensed in the State of Michigan:

  • Apply by completing a Michigan Education Course (Must have been completed within two years and have successfully passed the National Registry examaination)
  • Apply by Reciprocity/Endorsement (Those that are currently licensed in another state at the same level of licensure they are applying for and have successfully completed the National Registry Exam)
  • Apply by National Registry Status Only (Those that are not licensed in another state, but are currently Nationally Registered; those that have exceeded 2 years from course completion; or those that have completed a Military course)

Not sure where you are located but more commonly there is Paramedic to RN and not the other way around. I worked in EMS for about 15 years and I did hear of a course like that but can't quite remember where it was offered of even if it was in Michigan. I would check Lansing Community College or other colleges and also major private ambulance companies such as Huron Valley as they are more likely to offer a variety of educational programs.
