RN or NP

Published

Hi!

I'm finishing up the prerequisites for nursing school, and I would love to work in the NICU due to family experiences. However, I am trying to figure out if I should go on to be a Neonatal NP afterwards. I am very interested in the decision making, however I would love to stay close to the patient and be hands on, and I have heard conflicting information of which would be better. For Neonatal NPs, did you prefer working at the bedside or as an NP?
Something that means a lot to me is also being able to do research, particularly in high risk obstetrics/MFM. Ideally, I would love to find a job where I could do research but also provide hands on care in the NICU. What would you recommend for this?

Thank you guys!

Id practice as an RN first, probably for a couple years minimum, then I'd decide. You might go for NP or decide you like being a nurse. Either way, both are good picks.

Just focus on getting through your program, passing NCLEX and gaining work experience.  Everything else you're wondering about is just a distraction at this point in your life.

It is nice ti have dreams but in the medical field you must have solid foundation  of knowledge to build on,you will have to wait, get hired, work a few years and then decide, don't forget litigation .
