RN New Grad Las Vegas, NV

Published

Hello Everyone,

I have found a lot of old posts on here about difficulty getting a new grad position in Las Vegas. I am a new grad with a BSN from MA, I have already gotten my temporary Nevada license, but I can't even get a call from any hospital. I have read in old threads people recommend contacting Nursing Managers directly, but as I have no RN experience I am a little hesitant. Also many RN's posted about private messaging them for help, but since the threads are closed I am unable to do that! Not sure if anyone has any contacts or recommendations. Look forward to any responses!

Thanks

I work in Las Vegas as an RN.

I recommend you apply to the Valley Health System. They hire many new grads. Even into ER and ICU.

They own 6 hospitals in the Las Vegas Valley. I think your starting wage would be around $30/hr.

I do not recommend the HCA hospitals here, consisting of Sunrise, Mountainview, and Southern Hills. I would also recommend you reach out to HR directly, inquiring about the status of your application(s), rather than speaking with department managers.

Your BSN will be advantageous to you here, many RN's in the area are still ADN only but the hospital preferences are shifting. LV is a funny market for new grads. You can make it happen though.

Are you only considering acute care hospitals? There are many openings in surgery centers, testosterone and fertility clinics, etc. Use the job search on Indeed.

Let me know how else I can help you.

Thank you so much for your advice. I have probably applied to over 20 jobs through Valley Health System and I have not gotten a phone call for any. Less than 24 hours go by and it then says you are not being considered. I would love to get into a hospital right away and have reached out to HR, but still no luck. Fertility clinics do spike an interest with me, do you have any recommendations on which? Also- may be a stretch, but any contacts you may have that may help? (Maybe direct message me if you do) Anyways, thank you so much for the advice I will keep trying. I will arrive in vegas next week, may be easier for me once I am there

Sorry but Las Vegas seems like a pretty bad place to start as a new grad, especially if you're coming from out of state without any internal contacts. There are definitely more new grads than new grad positions here. UMC currently has a new grad position open for their burn ICU, I would highly recommend applying to that. You only have to do one year on that particular unit and are allowed to transfer after that. The unit itself has a good team of nurses that help each other out, and you will learn a lot of transferable skills there.

Hey everyone! I am also having trouble navigating through the Las Vegas health systems. Do people know when the residency programs/new grad positions open up for those who graduate in Dec 2017?

Thank you!

Hi! So there are three hospital systems in the valley: Valley Health, HCA, and St. Rose (Dignity Health). Also there is UMC (University Medical Center).

Dignity Health is on a hiring freeze, unfortunately. I've done clinicals at all three and they are wonderful hospitals, but my friend with a connection spoke with the director of their new grad program, and it is suspended indefinitely. She estimates the hiring freeze may end in a few months, if you're willing to wait. However, I've heard they only hire new grads sporadically, on a case-by-case basis. So if you need a job ASAP, I'd say look elsewhere.

The HCA hospitals (Southern Hills, Sunrise, and Mountainview) all have StaRN programs. There is supposed to be a cohort beginning soon, so if you visit the HCA career website and search StaRN, it should pop up. If there's nothing there in Las Vegas, the applications might not be out yet. I know they do ED, ICU, MS, and possibly Peds ER. They may accept new grads into other positions on a case by case basis. Unfortunately, if you apply and they reject you, they don't usually even email you. They just change the status of your job on the career site.

The Valley Hospital System definitely takes new grads into M/S, not sure about specialties. Their career site Working at The Valley Health System | Jobs and Careers at The Valley Health System has quite a few RN I positions you can apply for. I haven't personally dealt with their HR/recruiting, so I don't have any insight into their hiring process.

UMC is our level I trauma university hospital. I think they hire new grads on a case by case basis, so look for RN I positions on their job site.

Something important to know about Valley Health and HCA is staffing: nurses on med-surg frequently have 8 or more patients at a time, including new grads. The nurses and staff you work with will be WONDERFUL and so supportive, but personally I know I can't handle that many patients safely.

Good luck! Let me know how your search goes or if you have other questions :)
