RN and MPH - where do I fit in?

Just wanted some guidance on a pondering question........

I am an LPN, completing my RN in Jan. 2006, I also have a BS in Health Science/Community Health and a Masters in Public Health. I currently work with seniors in a nonprofit, which I like. But, I need to live and I don't think my current job will make me a "substantial" increase in salary when I finish my RN.

I only want to clinically nurse on the weekends - preferable OB, or MedSurg; but what kind of salary do you think I should be offered? I have 5 years exp. as an MPH and 8 years as an LPN. I really want to work more in research, but those jobs have a very low turnover.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Hello, 2blessed2Bstressed,

I am not certain that you would be offered a salaried position just part time. You will probably be offered an hourly position in line with others with your experience. Not much room for negotiation.

Good luck!

I am not sure what your rationale is. Are you saying that someone with my qualifications would be offered a part time, hourly, non negotiable position?

Hello,

You stated that you wanted to work part time. And, if you work in the hospital as a nurse, this will probably be an hourly position. The hospital will not factor in the degrees.......

You have to look at the requirements of the job, rather than your own qualifications. If you want to be a clinical bedside nurse, no one cares (sorry to be blunt) that you have an MPH. It is not required for the job, so they are not going to pay extra for a qualification that is not required to do the job. If you were applying for research positions that involve your MPH concentration, then it would definitely come into factor in a big way, but those are usually not weekend only positions.

Your LPN experience might up your hourly pay as it would count as nursing experience for clinical nursing positions.

Best wishes for finding a position that works for you!

You should also know that it may be hard to find a hospital willing to train you into OB if you are only wanting to work part time. Med surg would probably be easier.

My hospital doesn't count LPN as nursing experience for the RN payscale. New grad RNs all start at the same rate regardless of previous experience in other jobs and other degrees.
