RN License by Endorsement - Background Check?

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

Hello everyone! I am trying to obtain a nursing license in Colorado by endorsement (I have an active license in another state). I submitted the application and fees as stated on the DORA website, and did my license verification through Nursys. However, I read through the instructions several times and was not able to find anything about a background check. I know that most states require you to submit fingerprints for a background check. So am I missing something? I tried calling DORA to find out, but of course have not been able to reach the person I need to speak with and she has not called me back. I know the process itself may take several weeks, which I am fine with, I just want to make sure that I am not missing anything in my application. Does anyone know anything about Colorado requiring a background check? Thanks!

Plenty of states do background checks without fingerprints. I've been licensed in four different states over the years, and have never had to be fingerprinted for licensure.

Okay, thanks so much for the info! Maybe CO is one of those that just doesn't require fingerprints. I have always had to be fingerprinted in the states where I was licensed, but Colorado is a new one to me. Thanks for the help!

Being that you are applying to obtain your CO license and i have just started working on and looking into the process, i was wondering if you know whether you have to have a CO home address to apply for a license... or is it possible to apply before one moves there? thanks!

You do not have to have a Colorado address in order to apply for a license. I currently reside in Georgia, and was able to get my license in Colorado with no problem. The only thing is that it won't be a compact license until you are a legal resident of Colorado, it will just be a single-state license.

Question, if I am just getting my license in California, can I quickly apply or an endorsement from Colorado if I am planning to move there? I know California is a not a compact state, and I'm wondering if that complicates things or makes it more difficult...Thanks!

Hi, I applied for CO license by endorsement. I did my license verification through Nursys. I would like to know how long it takes to get CO license once you establish your Colorado residency (I have a current KY compact state license). Is there any other requirement other then establishing residency?
