I'm looking for other RN's who have worked as a Case Manager in the area
of Foster Care and Social Services. I have worked in Case Management for
several years but never with children or the Foster Care system. We are
moving to New York soon and I noticed that there are a lot of Care Homes
and/or Foster Homes that advertise for nursing positions. Have any of you
worked in this area and if so, what were the pros & cons?
Thank you!

I worked in that area before but not directly for the Foster Care Agency. I worked for an agency that contracted with Child Protective Services.... In any case:
Pro: 1.) There are others on staff available to take care of a lot of the work that a nurse case manager would normally have to take care of in the hospital setting. For example, there are social workers that actually perform social work and are not expected to do anything else and technicians that help with the run-around, errands, etc. Con: 1.) You can have a very very high case load and just about ever child on your case load will be "high acuity" meaning very high at-risk clients. There are very few kids that are in the foster care system that are doing well medically or emotionally. 2.) A lot of wear and tear on your personal vehicle (You are lucky if you have a company car). 3.) A lot of hard work. A lot of paperwork. A lot of meetings or appointments... and 4.) A very thankless job... but that is nursing in general.
Good luck. :)
