Rn to BSN online while working...

Nursing Students Online Learning

This one is for those of you doing your BSN online and working simultaneoulsy.

Once I get my RN (through an ADN program) I plan to do my BSN through Cal State Dominguez Hills. I want to do it full time (12-14 units a semester) so I can finish in just over a year (four semesters). Anyone out there completing their education this way AND working fulltime too (three twleves?)? I'm just wondering if you find this doable or a nightmare? I should mention I have a hubbie (who is very supportive) and three kids who will be 12, 10 and 8 by that point.

Thanks to all of you who read and/or post.

Hey Cheri,

I looked at the U of Wyoming website about the RN-BSN program. Everything looks like you said but it doesn't look affordable at first glance. Like $300+ per credit for non-res? But then I saw a scholarship thing for people who live in certain states with a GPA of at least 3.0 who pay 150% of resident tuition. Is that what you're referring to? That would mean it would be more like $144 per credit (much better). Is that scholarship for a limited amount of people or for everyone who meets the requirements? Sounds like it could be a great way to go.

Hey Zacarias,

Here is a quote from the UOW website about their online tuition policy:

"When registering just for Online UW courses, all students will be assessed their tuition/fees through the Outreach School where there is no tuition differential for resident versus non-resident classifications (all students are assessed resident rates). Online UW courses have an additional $40/credit online fee assessed."

You can find this at the following link.

This comes to $127 per credit hour for the RN to BSN...which I think is outstanding.

Cheri :)

I see you are in Orlando--why Univ of Wyom. instead of Jacksonville Univ. ? Just curious as I am looking into these two schools ? MoNurse

I started back to school Fall 2003...got hooked...started an online ASN program Fall 2004 with Deaconess College of Nursing. I love online format and plan to do as much of my education as I can this way...I have always been a very independent thinker and a go getter.

I am almost exactly 29 1/2 now (I'm a New Years Baby)...will be 30 when I sit the LPN boards...then hope to sit the RN boards just after turning 31.

I have my eye on doing the RN to BSN online through University of Wyoming.

I am still throwing around ideas of what type of MSN program I want to do...I guess I have a few years to decide...

Where are you doing your ADN?

Hi MOnurse,

I did look into JUOnline but decided against it simply due to the $375 per credit hour. I do not think tuition alone should be considering when choosing a program but I have found that there are at least a handful of programs that offer equal quality for a more reasonable tuition...I chose OUW out of these based on their gen ed requests and program schedule.

Examples:

University of S Alabama

$187 per credit hour

Florida Hospital College

$220 per credit hour

Fort Hays State University

$102.60 per credit hour

To name just a few...oh and of course...UOW at $127 per credit hour. I have spent so much already through DCN online that I have to be really frugal as I move forward into my BSN and MSN...

Cheri :)

I dropped out of college at 19, started having babies. Got my LPN at age 25, about to get my ASN at 30, hope to be a BSN before I'm 35...35...yikes. I'm getting on up in age!

Yesterday, I was 19! Or so it seems.

Specializes in tele, stepdown/PCU, med/surg.

Cheri,

Thanks for that quote from the U of W website! Thank goodness you're such a good researcher or I'd me up a creek! LOL I really need a reasonable BSN program. I would love to go to a school with a great reputation, but I might as well wait until graduate school for that. No one cares where you got your BSN, just if you have one or not.

Thanks again!

I am currently on excelsior's ADN program, I really want to continue to BSN, I want to consider other options other than excelsior, I am afraid I wont be able to transfer Micro. A&P etc.

Do you guys recomend the excelsior BSN program???

Liberated,

You will notice I just posted a new thread on this subject of Micro and A & P exams for credit not transferring into a BSN program. There is already one reply stating that the credits transferred (did not mention to where) and one reply stating that the Micro exam through EC did not transfer into UOW. It is my guess that this lack of transfer has something to do with most programs expect Micro & A & P to have a lab with it. Hopefully there will be more responses over the weekend opening up more specifics on this subject.

I would suggest that if you want to expand your BSN options, I would take Micro and A & P online or through a traditional format for credit to increase your chance for credit transfer.

Cheri :)

The Cal State Program is all online as well and I'm a CA resident though I don't know if there is a difference in tuition or not. Thanks for all the great links to online schools... I's sure this has been helpful to those who have read the thread.

Curious too... have you figured out how long the online degree through UOW will take you? I couldn't find out of they run year round or not....
