RN-BSN more gen eds?!

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

I applied to start in August. However, I'm a little annoyed that I may have to take an additional 8-10 classes on top of all my nursing classes. There's a bunch of English, history, and politics class that they require.

For for those currently enrolled, have completed UTA, and those about to start....

please comment end below and lemme know how many more classes you had to take in addition to nursing courses?!

Do people usually take an average of 8 more??

No experience with UTA but yes, all of the accredited bridge programs have additional gen ed requirements as part of the requirements for a BACHELOR degree is 120 credit hours including about 45-60 credit hours of general education courses.

Thanks for the response. Not sure about every bridge program requiring additional courses... One of the schools in NJ I applied to is only making students take nursing classes. Maybe I need to compare the amount of credit hours for both schools.

Anyway. Thanks

Also not a UTA person, but, when I attended a BSN completion program elsewhere, I only had to take the nursing courses because, between the transferable college courses included in my original diploma program and the two years of college I had long before I ever thought about going into nursing, I met all the general degree requirements. However, I remember many of the other students in the program, with ADNs, complaining incessantly about how many general ed courses they had to take in addition to the nursing courses (the tired, old "Why do I have to take American history? What does that have to do with nursing?" whining ...)

That makes sense that your other degrees in college covered a lot of the gen Eds.

And it also makes sense that to graduate from a BSN program, you need a certain amount of credit hours. Thanks for the response.

The RN-BSN bridge itself is only nursing classes but there are often (for accredited programs) other general Ed requirements. Any program that is offering a bachelor degree without general eds I would be wary of - especially if you intend to go to get a msn or DNP

Not wary.... If you live in NJ and went to an ADN program here, all the pre reqs for the ADN program is sufficient for the RN to BSN. No additional classes besides basic Statistics. UTA requires a lot of hi sorry and politics classes. Only thing is, it's not an accelerated program like UTA.

Ramapo College is very well known in NJ.

UTA wants me to take 7 gen ed classes.

I graduated in state of Florida. I applied to many schools and the most number of gen Ed I'd have to take was only 3. most of the programs, none.

I chose UTA because I moved to Texas. I heard of UTA when I moved down here, and the program was 100% online.

I was accepted to the Rn bsn programs in Florida but I had to be physically there on campus and I can't relocate again when I just moved.

So, I regret moving to Texas. I'm just keeping it steady... It looks like I'm gonna get my bsn in over a year And a half

Wish I hadnt been convinced by my family to move here...

Hey EternalFeather,

Thanks for the response. I'm starting to get a better idea of how many I'll be taking if I choose to go with UTA. I have a feeling that UTA requires less nursing courses (correct me if I'm wrong) so they need students to take extra classes to supplement the number of required credits to graduate with a BSN degree.

Anyway, hang in there! I'm sure at the end of the program, you'll be glad you did it. Good luck!
