RN to Army Medic or LPN

Hello everyone!

I am seeking guidance on my odd predicament I am in trying to rejoin the U.S. Army.

In 2015 I got out of active duty (enlisted) and signed a contract with the reserve to keep my “foot in the door” while I completed my BSN degree. In December of last year (2018) I graduated and started working at a local hospital to maintain my skills and to pay rent while simultaneously working with an AMEDD recruiter to put together a 66H packet for the FY2020 board in October 2019. Unfortunately, a new mission just came out and RNs with under two years of experience are not being considered anymore.

Since this new mission was posted, and my reserve contract ended in March, I am considering rejoining active duty as a 68W (Medic) or 68C (LPN) under the Army Civilian Acquired Skills Program (ACASP).

If I did this, would there be an in-service route to transition to the Nurse Corps since I already have an RN license? What are your thoughts on this?

Side Note: I know most people will say to wait the two years or to rejoin the reserve and work as an RN until I am eligible to direct commission. However, my family and I planned to return to active duty once my civilian education was completed. I also do not want a longer break from active federal service than what I already have.

Thank you

Enlisted to officer in AMEDD is difficult at best. I think this would only be a way for you to continue serving, I doubt it would be a pathway to commissioning in the Nurse Corps. Not only is the mission changing, but there is also downsizing on the horizon. Are you only trying to go active, or are you looking at Reserves for 66H too?

I’m trying to go active duty. I flirted with the idea of the reserve, but the experience requirement is the same.

Wow ... two years for everyone? That is going to be a bummer for a lot of folks.

Try reenlisting AD Option 40 to the Ranger Regiment and the SOCM course or enlist 18X to become a 18D.

I look forward to hearing your progress, and I hope you enjoy working out. ?

Yes, I'm a tool for knowing what all of that is.

Hahaha I was actually thinking about option 40 and going through the SOCM course. I’m prior combat arms so it’ll be a good way to combine that experience with my medical experience. You’re not a tool at all! Lol
