RN administration...remember from where you came.

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was wondering if any of you direct patient care nurses feel that the nurse administrators should put on some scrubs, say, a couple times a year or so, and really see whats going on on the units. I think once a nurse climbs the ladder to the tippy top, they lose sight of what is happening at the "front lines".

I was charge nurse on a busy 3-11 shift. We were, as usual, short on staff when we started getting slammed with admissions. When our nursing supervisor asked our director of nursing if we could call someone in for some extra help, her reply was "NO...IT IS WHAT IT IS"

Sometimes I think they just lose touch.:twocents:

Where I used to work, the nurse managers HAD to do shift work every few weeks to continue to know what it was like to do direct-care nursing. They may have only worked a 4 hour portion of the shift but it did keep them connected.

When I took a new position that was non-clinical, my manager(non-nursing manager) thought it was beneficial that I worked at least 4 hours/week on the units. It was tough at first because there was some of "you're one of them now" cracks but that faded quickly. Always loved bedside nursing but also loved a different side of nursing too-had the best of both worlds!

I think they should spend a day just doing all the asinine charting they make us do each day. Then the next time they decide to add some more double charting they will think twice.

I tried management and often brought the nurses' point of view into the picture. I was constantly told by higher management that I had to stop thinking like "one of them." I'd remind them that I was "one of them" but just on a different level.

Needless to say, the job didn't work out.

Sounds like they only wanted a "yes" man. They didn't treasure what you brought to the table!

where I did a 400 hr externship in the spring the unit's nurse educator and director would all don scrubs and take patients if the unit was swamped. It was really nice to see that type of teamwork and solidarity.

Have a an interview next week where I hope to be one of those educators that would serve as a mentor and take a pt. load when needed-miss direct-patient care.

I myself have just rung to speak to my 'administrator' re something urgent & have been told 'he is in a meeting' - again. How many meetings do people need to attend rather than getting on with the running of the hospital?

It is quite pathetic. I honestly think they tell their lackeys just to say they are in meetings so the don't actually have to deal directly with nurses and their very real, world problems.

The managers I have had were required to attend different meetings and be on a minimum amount of committees. BUT they had a beeper that would allow them to be called away if there was an emergent matter, no meeting would get in the way of helping their staff.

Lucky you Otessa! I have been trying to reach my manager for 2 days re something very important, and I keep getting his flunkeys who say 'they will get an answer from him directly'. They must think we are all stupid at being fobbed off and thinking we don't know the managers just don't want to deal with us or our complaints.

It's quite pathetic.

Unbelievable that your manager wouldn't return calls! Several of my past managers had their offices right on the unit so they were readily available when not in meetings and had office times in the AM and PM for questions/concerns.
