5 rights of patient medication administration, when you're self medicating

Stupid OTC medication errors I have done to myself.

1) I took my dogs rimadyl tablet.

2) Half the time when I have a minor headache and "think" to take some acetaminophen, 20 minutes later I think, "Did I take some acetaminophen or did I just think about taking some?"

3) I have OTC eye drops for itchy eyes, allergy relief. Have had them for over a year. I was complaining that I could only take them once a day yet my eyes would itch throughout the day. So I finally re-read the instructions....take 2 drops 4 times a day!

4) A nurse friend with twin boys who were getting ear and eye drops. Yep, you guessed it, put the ear drops in their eyes!

5) Not a medication, but I had transferred some shampoo and hair gel to different bottles. Got them mixed up. Three times in a row I was putting shampoo in my hair and blow drying it, thinking I was putting in hair gel!

I love the fact that you refer to is as "refused!" It is one of the silly rights made up by vexatious (don't worry, I had to look it up--still not sure I'm using it correctly) people who think we need 10 rights of med administration.

One of my dogs is able to "unwrap" the pill...i.e., Get the pill pocket off, eat that, and then spit out the actual pill. That stinker.

Yep, find his pill on the floor 1/2 hour after I was sure he had taken it!

We give our dogs glucosamine/chondroitin supplements. One of the big pet stores sells chews specifically for dogs. We get a cheaper one at Target, but have to put it in a pill pocket. That usually works.

Thanks, I've only tried two different variations. I will keep searching. I just wish I could find samples instead of a whole bag or bottle only to find he won't take them. But I've been able to give away the ones he won't take to neighbors.

I just re-read your post, I didn't understand it the first time I read it. I guess I supposed to say he was non-compliant, or is there a new more acceptable term :roflmao: . I wish I could tell him if he doesn't want to follow the doctor's orders he can sign out of here AMA!

Hope I don't get shut down for terms of service violation :). Do you give your dog the glucosamine and omega -3 supplements? Sooo many people and the vet recommend those. Needless to say my dog won't touch that stuff either. He's driving me crazy.

My dog is 4 years older than her life expectancy, I'm thankful that she still knows where to poop!
