Rewards for picking up shifts?

Published

As a software developer by trade, we're used to working through lunches, never leaving the building, working all night when we ARE home and ignoring our kids and whatnot (gotta keep learning, what you learned 10 hours ago is now outdated!), so the idea of 3 12/hr shifts seems like it could be beneficial and give time to relax a little.

Talking to some friends in school for their RN right now, they mentioned that some nurses (they work at Banner Desert here in AZ) can absolutely make some extra dough on the side by picking up shifts. While my legs and feet have some energy, I figured that may be a great way to help pay off the school debt and establish some savings and/or vacation monies.

Anyone here pick up shifts for some extra cash? From CNA to LPN to RN I'm curious with your experiences if you woudln't mind sharing. Don't know if I'd do it all the time, but on days like super bowl sunday and traditional holidays (well cept for maybe christmas, etc.), I'd love to be working. I'll vacation when all the nutjobs are back at work :)

Well, in Brazil if you work for a private institution, if they ask you, you have to stay. No choice. They say you're doing a "favor", but if you don't do it, soon they will kick you. Lots of competent nurses waiting for your job...

In public institutions, no extra bonus either; generally, they give you a free day (it means the same amount of hours that you've worked). But at least you can say what you want to do. Whether stay and work, or go home. Since you work for the government, you can't be fired, unless if you do a huge mistake.

Just to add another coment...

Other countries look like a paradise for nurses in my opinion...:balloons:

Kind regards.

in ltc nurses are paid a bonus for not calling in during a two week period..usually runs like $100 to $150 depending on the problems with staffing

if you work on an unscheduled day you receive a bonus of $60 to $75, this is given whether or not you are asked before or after schedule for month comes out

some facilities will give double pay if you are called in on short notice..

one facililty in town has one nurse designated each shift that has to stay over if there is a calll-in that facility has a very high turnover rate needless to say...i am not sure what the rate of pay is for the stayover

we get overtime for over 40 but most places you have to work 80 in payperiod before you are given overtime

My facility is in California, and from what I read our hospital tops the list so far. A extra day, which would be a 7th in a payperiod, pays $250. A 24 hour shift pays the $250 plus double time.

Granted 24 hour shifts are brutal (I have never done one), but a extra shift a pay period really helps to save or to pay off some bills :rotfl:

Wow!! That's kind of scary. My old hospital wouldn't let us work more than a double. Too dangerous. I remember what I felt like after a double and I cannot imagine adding another 8 hours to that. :imbar

We get nothing. And no overtime is allowed for any reason whatsoever. You guys are lucky! Can you send me an application?

We get "CSI" pay. I believe it is critical staffing incentive. It is 1.8 times your base salary in addition to your overtime, shift diff, WE or holiday pay. It doesnt' matter if you are RN, LPN, PCT everyone gets it.
