So i've been abroad for 8 years, and now I've have decided to come back to the US and start nursing again, travel nursing to be precise. I remember getting a job was pretty much just a phone call away, most of the time agencies contacting me with a gig - that being due to the shortage at the time. How would it be now? - especially that i've been away for quite some time. How smooth would the hiring process go (for a RN)? What is the prospect of landing a job while still overseas and basically just flying in to immediately start working?

Most hospitals are going to want recent experience. Have you been working as a nurse?
Not for the past year
If you have worked one out of the last two you should be OK but you may be turned down still by some managers.
You will need a week in the US before starting an assignment if for no other reason than time required for a drug screen. Call some agencies and see what they say. You have a good license or two?

Urology
Urology as in Med surg market is not good. L&D and Cath Lab are high demand and high paid.
