Returning to nursing after 7 year absense

Nurses Recovery

Published

I worked hard and got my nursing license back. But I am on probation for the next two years and I am having trouble getting a job. I have also not worked as a nurse for seven years. I do have 16 years of nursing experience though, mostly acute care hospital experience. I am thinking of taking a nurse refresher course but they are expensive and I am wondering if it will make a difference or not. I live in MA. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! I am brand new to this board.

Hi - I know in our state (Louisiana) u would have to take refresher course(s). I'm not sure how many though.

Good luck!

Even if you're not required to take a refresher course, you'll want to take one because things have changed A LOT in seven years. It's worth the expense, and it will probably give you a leg up when looking for work. Do it!

Definetly! Good point Viva!

Do you think if I take CEU courses that update my nursing knowledge in pharmacology and other aspects of nursing that this would help? Also, what types of courses would you take to do this ?

Zachjessmom, where do you live? I choose not to get my license back as here in CA there is such a nursing glut (50% or new grads can't get jobs) that it wasn't worth getting my license back. No one would have hired me, as like you, I have been away from the bedside for 7 years. I hope you are in a better job area!!!
