I definitely think you have reasons to be encouraged. Shorter exams mean you did either very well or very poorly. Longer exams mean your performance was very close, one way or the other. (See www.ncsbn.org - NCLEX Candidate Bulletin for more information.)
So basically, last time you failed but it was quite close, going all the way down to the wire @ 265. This time, with 88 questions, it was not close - in other words, not nearly as hard for the computer to make a decision. So the only way you failed this time is if you performed much more poorly than you did the first time. I doubt that you actually went in reverse with your nursing knowledge.
While you're right that you can't tell pass or fail just from the number of questions, under the circumstances of these two exams, I'd say it looks pretty good.
Congrats on your victory!
I took the THING last month and failed. How did you study differently? I also took the Kaplan class. I was floored when I left the testing center. I knew I had failed early in the test. I did really bad and I knew it. If you can share any tips with me, please do.
Thank you,

I retook my nclex today and got 88 questions. I know this could be good or bad. I took the first test and failed with 265. I am so nervous and now I have to wait 2 days to find out my results. Ahhhhhh! Anyone have any encouraging thoughts? :uhoh21:
