I'm at a lost on how to put together my resume. I have a few things going against me, so I'm completely stumped on how I'll be able to compose a good enough resume. Really, really need a lot of help or some L
Some facts/questions:
-I'm no longer a new grad (graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing - 2009), not a fresh graduate but as my only experience in nursing is from clinical rotations as a student, can I or do I need to include them?
-A foreign graduate
-No work experience in nursing field (work experiences are from another country and most importantly from different industries), it has been a while since I was employed. I just focused on being a mom for a few years.
-This is a career change. Got the first degree while working, continuously worked, stopped work, studied BSN, become a mom.
-I put my employment as far as 18 years ago (too much?), I know it shows my age but then my first degree is also dated on that year
-Based on the above facts who do I put as references, since my employers/ and professors are all overseas? Will acquaintances do who work in the healthcare professions? Or shall I put email addresses (and company websites) of my previous employers? And ask letter of recommendation from the Dean of my nursing school?
- I suppose I couldn't put in my resume experience in changing urinary catheter of my mother, and performing various care for her (she suffered stage 4 lung cancer), as this was not professional work experience? happened before i studied nursing.
Comments, suggestions, anything will be much appreciated. Forgive me if I sound ignorant with my questions. Thank you.

Alright, get ye back to a refresher course. Especially after being out of practice for more than three-four years. Check your BON if they offer or refer a refresher program. If you have the funding or arrange it, check around to find a college that offers both theory and clinical refresher package, similar to this: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/wdce/hsi/nurserefresher.html
Also scout your workforce centers to see if one caters to professionals. Most don't and the one that does may not be in your county, meaning their ability to help may be restricted to reviewing resumes and announce workshops that professionals would use to, say, apply for federal jobs. But check anyway and use that in conjunction with your local workforce center which may be more blue-collar.
In the meantime, parents who have been out of the workforce for a number of years and have minimal alternative experience such as volunteer work may need a functional resume. Although functional resumes are not preferred by hiring managers, this format allows you to emphasize your skills while downplaying your employment history. Use your cover letter to briefly explain your recent gap, but emphasize that you have kept your skills up to date and are energized to return to the workforce.
You can highlight the following activities on your resume:
* Volunteer/Community Involvement (PTA, Charity Work, Fund-raisers): Just because you weren't paid doesn't make the experience any less valuable, so treat volunteer work like you would a paid position on your resume. If you held leadership roles or made a difference to your organizations, tout your accomplishments and the key skills developed. You can include volunteer work in your Work Experience section to cover the employment gap.
* Continuing Education: Show that you've kept your skills refreshed through courses, online learning and/or independent study.
* Freelance Projects: If you've done consulting/freelance work that's related to your job target, include project highlights in your Work Experience section.
* Professional Development: Demonstrate your commitment to the field by including membership in professional organizations and participation in conferences.
* Work-at-Home/Self-Employment: Even if you worked part-time for yourself or your partner, include the experience on your resume.
And most importantly, plan how you'll describe your employment gap in your interviews, because you will be asked about it. Answer with pride and confidence (but not too much personal detail), and communicate to the employer that you're ready and enthusiastic about making the transition back into the workforce.
And speaking of volunteer work, start looking into a free clinic position to ease you back into the saddle. One or two times a week while job-hunting should help while giving you a local reference and something to add to your resume. Once you get several months experience in, you can move the Community Service section above your Education & Training to show the recent experience.
To be truthful, be prepared for a hard slug in this economy. In the meantime, look this over for ideas on your resume:

Nice resume, Bayat. I like the career chronology. It shows a diverse professional background concisely. Well-done! I'd like to borrow some of those ideas.
The trouble with hiding your age is this: when you sign up with HR your first day on the job, the secret is out of the bag. And you've yet to complete your orientation/probation. I'm just sayin'....... Discrimination can occur anywhere along the line, not just in the screening process. It may be best to deal with it upfront. (What do others think?)
One more suggestion for Redfirefly: Your local community college might have counselors who can give advice on resumes, interviews, job searches, etc. I was able to meet with one free of charge, one-on-one, for the 50-minute hour on an ongoing basis for a few sessions. She was very well-versed in job search strategies in addition to other counseling issues, and was able to individualize advice for my situation. I got very little help from my state job service office. Might be worth checking the community college route. The local libraries here also have job search and resume workshops open to the community. That's where I made the connection with the college counselors, initially.
Thanks for the very informative replies. Appreciate them.

hi red! I would also start volunteering at a local hospital. I think you could use not only the refresher course, but also some more recent entries on your resume, even if it's just volunteering.
-i would remove the whole qualifications section. those are required of anyone in nursing. able to work in a team during an emergency? sorry, but that's called a code. best of luck to you!
