50 residents/rpn

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I work in a LTC facility in canada. When i started i was responsible for 32 residents (all care. Meds, treatments, dr orders assessments everything). Since we changed management about 8 months ago our role has since changed. We changed over to just administering meds to 50 residents and the rn taking over the rest. As of last week a memo was sent out stating that the rpn would be responsible for the mar (meds) and tar (treatments) for all 50 residents.

As it stands now, my med pass takes me about 3-3.5 hours in the morning. I take a lunch and come ba k and start my lunch meds. Im usually done in about 1.5 hrs. Then i do my charting, pain assessments (everytime i administer any prn med for pain i have to do one), and catch up on whatever else.

I dont see how i can possibly do treatments for 29 people a day as well ( the average # of treatments a day at our facility)..... i already talked with my DOC and told her it was unrealistic. She keeps saying, its not going to be that bad, most the treatments are creams.

Im so overwhelmed. Thoughts????

As it is now i only have time to take a lunch break, when i am entitled to x2 15 and a 30.

Most of the time in LTC facilities where I have worked, the treatments were not being done. Some nurses would not even bother to initial off the TAR. If you find that the workload is still overwhelming after a period of readjustment, then your recourse is to find another job. I highly doubt that your coworkers are going to accept consistent reports from you of incomplete tasks. This will cause problems for you that might not be worth it in the long run.
