clueless researcher

Hello,
My name is Jen and I am a health researcher who is conducting a study on blood exposure of home health nurses. I have one major problem, I am not a nurse and have no clue about the field. I figured who best hear from than you all. So where do I start??? I am currently trying to figure out how to work the state board of nursing licening database. Based on my limited knowledge, home health nurses can be employed by a variety of employers (hospitals, health departments, hospices, HH agencies, etc). Some states ask your employment setting during relicensure (I don't even know if that is a word). I am trying to figure out how h.h. nurses answer the employment setting question. Can someone help me? Basically, if you work for a hospital but did home health nursing would you select a hospital or home care as employment setting?
Another questions: can home health nurses work for themselves? Or do you have to work for an employeer (hospital, hh agency, etc).
thanks in advance for anyone who will take the time to help me. As my screen name says, I am clueless.

I have a few questions. What type of statistical study are you doing? I am not sure why you would need to access the BON database?
I would need more information before I can assist you. Did you take a statistics class? That would help you get started.
What is your focus related to exposures as the topic is broad.

Great questions. We need to have access the BON database to identify home health nurses to send a survey to. We are going to be asking home health nurses about exposure to patient's blood or body fluid visibly contaminated with blood.
I have taken a few statistics classes. We have a statistician on our team to help with sampling. But we are not at that point yet. We are in the formative research phase and trying to figure out how to best identify home health nurses to send a survey too.
I hope this helps.

Clueless do you have an idea on if you want a multi state/multi country study? I know there are quite a few members here in home health but I don't know if that sample is big enough. I don't think you can capture home health nurses from the BON though as I think that would not be accessible. If you go with a state such as Ohio you can pay for a list but I don't remember if it has the venues people are practicing in. Different countries may have different OSHA like laws that may make the data unequal if that makes sense.
I have involved in home health risk management for many years and may be able to give you general information but as far as exact statistics I could not do that due to confidentiality and such...
Do you have a plan of intended action/results or what you would like to do after you get the results of the study?

We are going to do a multi state study (two states in the southeast). Each of these states' BON can identify HH nurses. We are going to have to purchase the lists. My question, I originally posed was to address some of the limitations in the BON lists. I would be great if you could email me directly and we can discuss further.

Probably someone from the states you are going to study would be better to contact you to give you more relative information. Good luck with your study.

Clueless, not to insult you, but I have to ask, have you done any research before? How is it one gets an assignment such as this without research experience?
You have to forgive me, but I will be blunt. We get a lot of suspicious requests here, sometimes I suspect by people who want to sell a needeless product to reduce blood exposure, under the guise of doing research. or to avoid paying for advertisements.
May I ask what are your credentials, and who is funding your study? You do not have to give names, but degrees, certifications, and type of organization providing the funding or the request for this information would be reassuring to me.
That said, I will add this, I am in NJ, and here you would only get a list of nurses in the state, not necessarily all the HH nurses. I also do my HH per diem, so on my app, my primary job would be for an insur co, so you will be missing a portion of your nurses. Nurses may work independently as HH nurses, they may have a business license.
If I were you, I would contact all the HH agencies in the states you are interested in, and ask them to distribute your survey. I would also advertise in nursing magazines, like Advance for Nurses and Nursing Spectrum, both of these can also be found on-line. You could also ask the admin of this web site to put an ad up asking for responses.
I tried to PM you but it says your box is full....................
Sorry ren, I truly am not that popular, just a pack rat, lol.
I cleared some out for ya.
MY apologies to clueless researcher. She has PM'd me and has provided me with enough info that I am satisfied she is legitimate. I have asked her to do the same here, in as much as she is comfortable publically releasing on an internet forum. So Jen, I can only speak for myself, that I would be willing to help you.
I have already pointed out that the BON data base is probably still going to leave you with gaps. Because for those who work per diem, there usually is not a question im the employment areas, and in NJ I honestly don't remember ever being asked that question, to say where else you work besides a primary job. I'd say roughly 50% of the nurses I work with have a second job for extra cash. And that would fall thru the cracks if you limit yourself to the BON.
Yes, nurses can work independently as HH nurses. We have one nurse here, who hasn't been on in a long time, who has her own foot care business, providing footcare to diabetics, etc... Other nurses do private duty, private visits for wound care and such. I am not sure how you would find them, maybe the Better Business Bureau? I know Lois is Medicaid certified, so you may be able to find info from Medicare and Medicaid as to how to find a list of all certified agencies. CMS may have a link on their site http://www.cms.gov .
Don't forget the yellow pages. You can find listings of all the HH agencies in there under nursing. Also, are you looking at nursing or also at home health aides, Physical therapists, etc...
Can you tell us what questions specifically you need answered?
What is happening with your study?
The study is moving forward. I have not had time to post on the message board. I am in the process of generating a list of questions to post on the board to help me better understand the day to day operations of a home health nurse. Thanks for your interest in the study.
