Requirements to Shadow a Nurse/APN?

Published

Where do I find information regarding setting up a shadowing exp with Nurses/APN (Advance Practice Nurses? I'm not currently working, and not in school.

Interested in shadowing a:

CCRN i.e. ICU or PACU Nurse to make sure CRNA (Nurse Anesthesiologist) is something that I would enjoy. Must have 1-3yrs Nursing exp as a CCRN for CRNA School (Nurse Anesthesiologist).

NA (Nurse Anesthesiologist)

NP In Women's Health OB/GYN

Certified Midwife

What is the longest that you are allowed to shadow? I'm in Upstate NY.

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

My organization isn't any different from others in this part of the country. Job Shadowing is no longer permitted in our facilities due to HIPAA & other liability issues. This would be especially true in OR and all other peri-operative areas, where patients are at their most vulnerable.

Is there something about CRNA practice that you're curious about? If so, you could go to the CRNA forum here on AN. I'll bet they'd respond to you.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

My facility allows it with an existing employee from another department and my OP practices allow a nurse to shadow me with a confidentiality signature and patients consent although psych might be a bit more laid back than some of the other areas like surgery etc. I normally am willing to offer up one shadow shift although I prefer 3-4 hours which should be sufficient to get a glimpse into my routine and yet not considerably slow me down.

Specializes in Cardiac (adult), CC, Peds, MH/Substance.

New York State Association of Nurse Anesthetists

Likewise, AACN has NY chapters, and so on for the other specialties.

It would be worthwhile to contact them and ask about shadowing.
