I usually put "open". Another idea is "negotiable". When I found out the going rate in my area (by word of mouth and looking on careerbuilder, etc.), the last time, I wrote the range for the job I was applying for. It happened to be $20-$24 an hour. I figure if I see $20-$24/hr in careerbuilder, then that is the going rate, especially if more than one employer lists that range. Of course, most employers never list their pay rates, so sometimes you have to use other sources for the info.

I understand starting RN rates in the St. Louis area are about $19/hour. That would tell me that rates here at least, are less than the $20 listed by caliotter. KC may be different, but I bet a little research will easily give you the average ranges for your area.
Best wishes!
