Reputation of BHCC nursing program

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Greetings...any insights from MA nurses and nursing students is much appreciated.

I am in my 30s with 3 kids and considering going into nursing. I have a BA and would love to do an accelerated BSN but there is no way I could swing it with my "full time job." So for now my best option is an AS from a community college. In the future I would plan to pursue an RN-BSN or MSN.

Anyone have anything to say about BHCC? Good or bad.

Thanks so much

I attend BHCC nursing program and am very disappointed in it. Quality of instructors is very low, they are lazy and unorganized. If you have a BA/BS from a 4 year school you will likely be as shocked as I was. If you have to do a weekend program then just go in knowing that teaching is poor, attrition at end of 3rd semester is at least 25% and morale is very poor. If you are interested in a CC day or evening program I would suggest Middlesex or Northern Essex - I have only heard good things about these programs.

I am currently attending the RN program at BHCC and I have two semesters left. I think its a great program, I too also work 40hrs, married, and have a four year old. I think its what you make of it that makes the program. The teachers are really good, the teachers are always there if you need any help. I am in the night program, and my teachers were great. Some were unorganized , but you will always have one or two teachers in college that will be unorganized.

I'm currently in the program at BHCC and to be 100% honest, its a joke. The "teachers" just read powerpoints. They dont actually teach. We have a running joke in our class that we are really teaching ourselves and will actually be graduating from youtube university. We feel as if we are on our own. The Dean is a joke. All they care about is their pass percentage rating on the NCLEX- which is fine, but start by getting teachers that can teach or teacher that actually care and dont just go through the motions. IF they actually cared, they would hold a meeting with all the nursing students and get the truth from people that are actually in the program. But they dont want to know. I raised a ruckus the first semester I was there and it fell on deaf ears. They dont care. They have their agenda and politics and students are the last thing on their lists. Mary Folan needs to retire and take Christine Johnsen with her.

Vivalaselvis,

I also raised a ruckus the first semester about the same two individuals and the dean. It is by far the worst school and instructors I have ever seen and I have attended several 4 year schools and community colleges. The only reason that program exists is to provide employment for old nurses that no one else would hire - since they are state employees it is very difficult to fire them no matter how incompetent and lazy they are. Even the other nursing instructors complain about the individuals you have mentioned. After graduation, people from my program wrote to their representatives and governor telling them how nasty the weekend nursing instructors were. If you want to make a stink, you must write Mass governor and the state reps - if you try to bring up issues within the school, they will just cover it up. I wish you the best of luck.

I was in the day program and thought it was great, but obviously there is a big issue with inconsistency amongst the various program offerings (nights/weekend/days).

Days were great. The teachers were well-informed and did their jobs. Obviously there was one or two that could have improved their teaching style but I guess you will find that anywhere.

My main issues with BHCC are how awful they are administratively. Case in point: I have had my transcript sent 3 times from BHCC to a grad program I would like to apply to and it hasn't arrived even once. Idiots work at that school.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. The program was less than 10k and I feel as if I learned a great deal and had awesome clinical experiences. I truly felt prepared to be nurse, but again, I did the day program.

Wow - are you in the evening program? Not sure which program you are talking about. Thanks

This thread was from a while ago but hope my answer helps. It was the evening program that I went to. A friend of mine is a current student in the program and likes is as well. He is in the day program.

Hope this helps!!

Where do you live? There are several other places you can try as well. I went to BHCC for a bit and I agree, it was unorganized in a lot of areas. My friend is in the Hybrid program and she likes it. So I guess each is different (day/night/weekend) Good luck!
