Renal Calculi Diet. After shockwave lithotripsy, is it low calcium diet or high in calcium diet? thankyou

You will want a low calcium diet to prevent reoccurrence.

It depends on the chemical conrent of the stones. Renal calculi are most commonly made of calcium carbonate but sometimes may be also from calcium oxalate, urates, phosphates and so-called struvite stones (ammonium magnesium phosphate) and still rarer kinds like cystine stones.

The diet follows two basic principles: restricting the main component when possible (like in case of oxalic acid stones, restriction of oxalic components like rhubarb, sorrel and other green leafy veggies) and changing urinary pH to increase components solubility and prevent supersaturation of the urine. In case of struvite stones, infection of urinary tract must be treated and diet should be tailored to acidify urine. In all cases, drinking a lot of fluids to decrease urine concentrationand prevent stasis, avoidance of very high consumption of vitamines C and D and moderate limitation of animal proteins (thus limiting both calcium and products from which uric acid is made) is necessary unless there are contraindications.
