Remote RN Case Management Question

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

I have worked in multiple capacities as an RN. I'm currently a Hospice Case Manager and absolutely love it, but feel I need a break from the emotional stress of Hospice. I would stay on PRN bc I love Hospice and my company, but need to take care of my emotional health.

I have been recruited for a remote RNCM role through BCBS. I have not interviewed or accepted the position. When I reached out to a previous co-worker, she said to "be careful" because she's heard stories of these positions monitoring the nurse via camera during working hours.

I don't want to waste time stating how self disciplined I am, that I have worked remotely before nursing, love caring for patients, have high integrity. But... I'm not comfortable with a company being able to monitor me 8 hours/day in my home. I completely get being prompt and responsive/available during scheduled hours... it just feels icky having someone watching me; bit to mention HIPAA concerns.

This would never have crossed my mind. The only time I was monitored via video was during exams getting my BSN years ago. Hoping someone has some insight, thank you in advance. Sending love to all my fellow nurses.

My SO works in this area in a leadership role. There are stories of this with remote positions in all industries. I can tell you though that these companies are not even remotely close to being organized enough to even consider something like this, they struggle just to keep the computers working, ha!

Most companies look for things like the amount of cases your work in a day, how often you touch a case a day, etc. They don't need to watch you work.

Most laptops come with camera covers and if not, they sell them at Best Buy and Walmart.

Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it. That makes complete sense. I'll likely over-produce, I just don't want to be spied on all day.

Black duct tape works well too

They do not monitor you via camera, but as previously stated they care about your case load and how many active cases you have open. If I remember correctly, when I worked for insurance case management we were required to have at minimum 16-20 active cases. Every day we would receive 4 cases that would require work-up/research and outreach. It's like cold calling to get people to come onboard for case management. I would just ask about the case load and outreach process.
