Remembering Cranial Nerves

Hi everyone! I have my final lab final coming up next week and i just can't remember these darn cranial nerves! I've got the order of them down, but remembering what they all control/do...well that's another story!

Any tips on how you remembered their functions?

I just had an A & P exam today!

The mnemonic I used was

Oh, oh, oh to touch and feel very green vegetables at home.

To remember whether or not they were sensory or motor, I used what others said previously:

Some say marry money but my brother says bad business marry money.

As for remembering actual functions/characteristics, it just came with studying. Some are more obvious, like vestibulocochlear. Some you have to work harder to know.

They tend to ask questions about the more "important" ones, like the vagus nerve. And trick you with the nerves relating to the eyes (optic is only sensory).

12 cranial nerves of Christmas. There's a video on youtube of a med school students singing it. I thought it was ridiculous when I first saw it.....but I'll be damned if it didn't cement all the info into my head. And yes......during tests I will silently sing the verse to myself till I get to the right nerve LOL I can't recall the info without the whole song yet!

On the twelfth nerve of the cranium,

my true love gave to me:

Twelve lovely lickings,

Eleven heads a-tilting,

Ten heart beats a minute,

Nine quick swallows,

Eight sounds, and balance,

Seven funny faces,

Six sideways glances,

Mas-ti-ca-tion!

Four; superior oblique,

Three cross-eyed glances,

Two eyes a-looking,

And a sense olfactory!

I drove the people at work nuts singing this under my breath at 4am. Everyone would chime in for mas-ti-ca-tion though
