Hi. I am an LPN currently living & working in northern Illinois. My husband & I are seriously considering relocating to Las Vegas within a year. I've checked out the requirements for transferring my license but haven't started the process yet because we're unsure of exactly when we'd like to relocate.

Although I have dozens of questions I'm concentrating on 2 main areas. 1. In Chicago Illinois there are many different neighborhoods. Some are less safe than others. Any tips/ suggestions on areas with lower crime rates in Las Vegas? (We will need to rent at first).

2. Long distance job search. I've never done this before. I'm in my mid 50's & have been working as a home health nurse for several years. Does anyone here know of someone who's received a firm job offer without a face to face interview?

All I can tell you is that as long as you don't live near the strip, you will be pretty safe. I'm a local and I live in montecito. Summerlin, green valley, blue diamond are all safe bets.

Thanks! I wish we could go right now! Just got done shoveling (again!). High on Monday is supposed to be -5 F. I lived in Vegas for a year as a kid (early 70's) & wish we'd never left!

We lived in the NW area, near Aliante and were pretty safe. Providence is good too!

I live in the southwest of Las Vegas and we love it (moved here in August). I work in home health per diem (private duty) with Maxim Healthcare, and they are often hiring. You can apply online, though I don't know if they give telephone interviews. There are also plenty of companies that do home health visits if that's what you meant. Give it a chance, it's so nice here! A high of 70 today.

GIRLLLLL talk to me when it's barely June and you've had your tenth triple digit day in a row. Or when I hasn't been below 95, day or night, since April. Ugh. I'm a local but I wouldn't sing praises about the weather just yet! Global warming is a real thing lol.

Thanks for the input. If we were able to leave Illinois NEXT year, then I'd only need to work full time for 2 years until my hubby can get his pension. But I'm really feeling self pity at the idea of having to spend even 1 more winter here!

Yes, I remember the summer from the year I lived in Vegas as a young teen! My classmates at school had to train me to not stay in the sun for longer than a few minutes at a time.

Honestly though, not making light of the brutal summers you guys have, but even last year when my sister dropped us at the airport (she lives in Arizona but the closest airport was in Vegas) the temp was 115 in the shade.. my husband & I felt just fine. When we got off our flight in Chicago the temp was in the mid 70's & we were DYING to get in somewhere that had AC! It really is true what's said about the humidity.

2 days ago I was out shoveling the driveway from 2 AM to 6 AM. I've lost track of how many times I've done that so far just this winter. I'm in my 50's so can't keep this up indefinitely. I don't LIKE these "polar vortex" periods, but can stand them. (Right now the actual temp is -5) It's shoveling for hours before my work day even starts that's killing me!

I've lived in Vegas since I was a kid so I've never had to deal with any real winters. Your brutal winters are about 1000x worse than our "brutal" summers. 3 months of staying inside during the day is nothing compared to what you have to deal with during your winters. Yes, it's dangerous to sit in the sun for extended periods of time and people do get very ill and die from heat exhaustion but as long as you're careful during the summer, 9 months of temps between 40 and 80 more than make up for it. We also have nice escapes from the heat that are within an hour drive such has Mt. Charleston, which is usually about 30 degrees cooler than Vegas. We also have a decent lake about an hour drive in the other direction. What I'm getting at is, summers aren't THAT bad here. Your brutal season involves shoveling snow at 3am to be on time for your long shift. During my brutal season I'm in my flip flops and sundress sipping a cold drink by the pool. I'm lucky to live here!

Hey Molly,

I am a private duty nurse certified trach and vent and looks like right up my alley. I just indeed app them on my phone and will apply shortly. Hopefully something good.
