I'm considering leaving my employer before the 1 year term I signed for my relocation benefit. I know I signed the contract, but I'm wondering if anyone has had the hospital actually ask for the money? While I'm not opposed to paying it back, I don't have that much money right now either (the company that moved me said it was almost $9,000), which the hospital states in the contract is due on the final day of employment should you terminate before 1 year. I'd be willing to pay it back over time, or considered staying per diem because the contract just says if I "terminate employment" and I thought if I stay per diem I'm not technically terminating employment. Any experience with this would be appreciated (also please don't tell me to just stay the 1 year, I'm aware of that).

Yes, I do know of several hospitals that have asked for money back from employees who didn't fulfill their contract. I also know of some that didn't. Per diem could work if your contract doesn't specifically state that you have to be working full time, and if you are able to complete the per diem shift requirements for the hospital.

It' scarey that you're trying to hold out hopes on the poss of staying 'per diem'. Some places may just not accept that condition when they stand to recoup $9000. It's a 50/50 chance. But some places will make concessions if they can partially benefit. Some things might be negotiable.
