Relocating to Columbus after ADN - Opinions??

Hello. I'm graduating from Sinclair's ADN program this May. :nailbiting::nailbiting: I'm trying to think ahead of the curve. My husband and I would like to relocate to Columbus (from Kettering) once I pass the NCLEX.

I understand BSN grads are more marketable, but what would you recommend for someone making this move? Have an accepting letter for RN to BSN program in hand during applications? Start applying to RN positions, even before I sit for my boards? Stay in our current city (after my boards) and continue working as a tech until I'm able to nab a position in the nurse-saturated city of Columbus?

If you have any experience or knowledge, it would be appreciated so much! Thank you!

Ummm, almost every state has a city named Columbus. Which Columbus are you referring to?

Once you pass boards, APPLY APPLY APPLY!! Columbus is NOT as oversstured at one may think, but it is still oversturated. I am an ADN RN, and i had a hospital job with Mount Carmel, which i loved loved loved!!! They do require you to sign a contract stating you will recieve your BSN in 4 years. Also, apply for New Grad programs. i know OhioHealth always advertising for their new grad program. Mount Carmel as well. May be a lottle harder for you to get into OSU, as everyone wants to work their to get the state benefits. Also try LTACH Select Specialty, i worked there as well.was not the best place to work, butigained invaluable experience which opened doors to the hospital position i was able to acquire at Mount Carmel. Wow them on your interview, and im positive you will prevail. Good luck to you!!

p.s. i only left the hospital, for a mon-fri job. i didnt want to work weekends or holidays any more. buti wilk be returning to bedside care, just dont know when. most likely after i obtain my BSN. i miss bedside nursing.

I'd also like to offer a word of encouragement. When I moved to Ohio 6 years ago, it was tough to get into hospitals without a BSN, unless a nurse was experienced with great references. Now the pendulum has swung back a bit, many hospitals are experiencing shortages, and Associate Degree nurses are being hired again. A few hospitals in Ohio are even offering sign on bonuses to experienced RNs!!

Here's another option to think about if you don't get any replies/offers for interviews to your job applications within Columbus proper. The ring of small towns 30ish miles outside big cities generally has cheaper housing/apartments. Many also have small community hospitals where it is much easier to get hired as a new grad with an associate degree. After 1-2 years of experience there you should easily be able to get a job in the city at one of the big employers. Best of luck!!!
