relocating to AZ need info

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I'm planning on moving to the central AZ area. Somewhere between Flaggstaff and the White Mountain area and I wanted to get some feed back from any nurses or ancillary staff that work in this area.

I have questions regarding payrates, step increases, cost of living, mandatory overtime, floating policies, morale of staff, benefits, nurse patient ratios, best places to work and scary places to stay way, way, away from. Actually any input would be great. I'm planning to either go into home health (prefer) or a med/surg unit.

I have 10 plus years in med/surg 34 bed unit acute care and 2 years in home health.

Thanks ahead of time for your help with this. God Bless

I don't live there, I live in Tucson. I can tell you the area is beautiful and Flagstaff has one of the best nursing schools in the area. That might mean something regarding jobs, I dunno. Arizona's a great place. Welcome! Feel free to PM me if you like.

Thanks redwinggirlie!!

I am associated with a home health agency called Nursefinders. I've been with them for oh, about 6 years now. I've been pleased with them and am waiting to get my required time in as an RN so I can work for them in that capacity. I'm a new grad, so I need about 6 mos to a year. Home health is fantastic. I sure do miss it.

You know, it may benefit you to check out a travel agency to place you in a hospital in that area to give you the time to check out the hospital with the possiblity of going permanent if you like the location. I am currently a traveler in Arizona, I have really enjoyed being here.

Hi, I see you live in Tucson, the city I want to relocate next year. I'm an LPN in Ontario, Canada and I can't take the cold anymore! Can you please give me more info on the hospitals, payrates, life style, renting, everything that you can think off ? I'm doing some research right now, and I see that I have to start with the ENCLEX, and apply to AZBON. I have a long way to go, but I'm determined to leave Canada. Thanks anticipate.

I live in Tucson, too. The pay range for a new grad is between $21.50-$24/hr. Bicycling, and hiking are big things to do here in AZ. The housing market is like anywhere else I guess, and there are lots of nice places to rent . I see you've been doing some research-have you picked out an area of town yet or a hospital that sounds interesting?

I live on the East side, but the Northwest side is nice as well. Central is do-able, but if I were to be honest, I would avoid the south side. Kino, St. mary's and TMC have psych units.

What made you decide on Tucson if you've never been here before!? It's awefully hot around here! You should schedule a trip this summer to check it out.

The heat doesn't scare me, I used to live in Grece and weather is the same in the summer. I can take the heat better than the cold. I'm also looking for a better paid job, with no 15% in tax like I pay in Canada on income; it is afully a lot. I just want to experience something new, in a warmer climate. Here in CA, I have full time hr. but I'm still hired as PT (after 2 years). I don't get it either! We complaine about nurses shortage, but yet from my class nobody got a full time position, no matter the speciallity they choose. The work force is taken by seniors nurses with not willing to retired therefore, we as beginers we don't get a chance. It is a lot to discuss on this issue. But that's the way I feel at work.

How I choosed Tucson??

Actually, I chosed Phoenix and Tuscon, but I saw that Phoenix has an increase crime rates than Tuscon. My final decision will be made acoording to were I will get a job offer! Thanx for the the info re: hospitals. I'll have to look those up. HAVE A GOOD ONE!

Well, Good Luck!

Also, Phoenix is much, much bigger than Tucson. It's got more hospitals and jobs, but you won't worry about finding work down here. If you apply at 5 hospitals in Tucson and 5 hospitals in Phoenix, you will probably end up with 10 job offers. I've been offered jobs while at clinical, without even applying, and I got picked for my job without even interviewing. I interviewed with them later for my behalf to make sure they were right for me, but they had already offered me the job before that.

I prefer Tucson (obviously)!

Good Luck again, and let me know what you decide!

Thanks again for your encouragement. I need to find hospitals that are going to petition me for green card too, if not.... I think I'll have go with recruiters so they take care of visa and everything else. As you can see I have a long roude in front of me, I'm getting scared ......

all the best to you!
