Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows how these are done? I mean, we interviewed at our first preference hospital, but do they only contact our referees if they want us (i.e. if we scored high enough in the interviews)? Or do the hospitals call the referees of everyone that they interviewed? I'm just very curious to know, because I had an interview at one of the private hospitals, and they said they only call your referees if they're interested in you; just wondering if this is how the public hospitals do it as well.
If anyone has any insight to this, please share :)

after you interview you are graded on that interview. There will still be too many people to fill the positions so the references will be checked. Say there is 100 positions to be filled, the top 120 interviewees will be referenced checked.
So what you are saying is that they only contact the referees of those candidates who scored the highest? It makes sense to me that they'd do this, but I didn't know if the public system had a specific process for the recruitment of new grads, where the hospital the person was interviewed must call the referees regardless of their performance.
this is the process that I am involved in at the moment in Melbourne. the computer match system is used here but it is dependent on the data that is entered for the applicant by the interviewing team. the process is divided into 5 parts. Your application if you do not meet the criteria that is set out in the application you loose points. your transcripts, your interview, written drug calculations and reference checks.
I also interview people for other positions. Recently I interviewed five people for 1 job. 3 of those people got their references checked. if between the application form, CV and interview I haven't made up my mind to employ them why would i waste my time doing reference checks? Also use professional references. NOT family friends! we can sniff that out at 10 paces.
I have just looked through my work emails. for a 150 positions that are offered at my health service there was 782 applicants. Do think that it is an effective use of time to check 2 references on each of those applicants even if their scores on the other 4 parts of their application are dismal? And believe me their are dismal interviewees out there. Sitting for 2 days doing interviews has shown me that.

I think it is only the hospital that is going to take you does your reference check, i.e, your interview score matches their level and they have a position.
I have been fighting the temptation to email my manager to ask if anyone has called him for reference checks, I just dont want to over think it too much. 26 days and counting!
4 more days...my heart will skip a beat every time my phone tells me I received an email on Friday until I get an email about new grad.

I think emails are sent out at 9am so we don't have to panic all day lol. This wait is horrible.
It truly is. I only hope that we get what we want. I was told by a new grad that the emails were sent to applicants at different times.
I just hope to get an offer...the hospital doesn't matter lol. Ohh ok, hmm. The information sheet says 9am but maybe it means from 9am onwards :/

Good luck to all our soon to be 'New Grads'', hope that your new career brings much satisfaction and the road is not too rocky. Strive to do the best you can do at all times, which may not always be to your satisfaction on reflection later on, but it was the best under the circumstances.
Look after yourselves and the nursing profession in Australia to be voted the most respected and most trustworthy for years to come.
Hope you all obtain ''grad years'' or a first year job that gives your lots of support, for you to gain that much needed confidence in yourselves and your education.
But most of all, from an old nurse to the youngins, please enjoy, have fun...make the most of each day. Do not let the bad times,..and there will be some instances, people, situations get to you for long, throw them off!! Goodluck
Thank you ceridwyn :)
