reference checks for jobs

Published

What would you do if you didn't really have anyone to comfortably list as a reference for a job posting?

I have only been in my current position for 6 months and would feel odd listing my manager...as we haven't exactly bonded yet. No write ups or anything but i feel she wouldn't have a whole lot of positives about me. Some jobs want FIVE references....eesh!

I have several nurses and a manager from my previous job, but I just wonder if that will raise red flags not listing anybody from my current position.

Thanks for any input

Most applications ask for your most recent position with a reference. Unless stated, it does not have to be your manager, is there a co-worker who you work with well, or a supervisor who seems to include you in making decisions? You should have had some type of 90 day evaluation, how did that go? You can list your current manager even if you do not feel there is a bond, the manager has most likely formed some opinion about you.

All the apps have been asking me to list people that are different than my supervisors that I listed on the job history. I've told the HR person that the supervisors were my references, and they have just brushed it aside as not being necessary, since it is the supervisor's opinions that they are seeking anyway. Just my recent experiences with listing refs.
